- Adaptação de Laboratórios Remotos a Cenários de Ensino: Casos de Estudo com VISIR e RemotElectLabPublication . Este artigo descreve vários problemas encontrados em aulas laboratoriais, em cursos de ensino superior, na utilização de laboratórios remotos baseados em sistemas PXI, utilizando o sistema VISIR ou uma solução alternativa. São identificados e explicados três problemas que foram relatados por professores que deram apoio aos estudantes na utilização dos laboratórios remotos. O primeiro problema prende-se com a necessidade de permitir aos alunos selecionar a localização específica onde um amperímetro deve ser inserido nos circuitos elétricos, mesmo que incorreta, replicando as dificuldades do mundo real. O segundo é causado por falhas de sincronismo quando são necessárias várias medições em intervalos curtos, como no ciclo de descarga de um condensador. E o último problema é provocado pelo uso de um multímetro em modo DC na leitura de grandezas em CA, um procedimento que colide com as definições do equipamento. Todos os cenários são apresentados e discutidos, incluindo a solução encontrada para cada caso. A conclusão que se retira do trabalho descrito é que a área de laboratórios remotos é um campo em expansão, onde a sua utilização prática permite o aperfeiçoamento e a evolução das soluções disponíveis, exigindo uma cooperação e partilha de informação entre todos os intervenientes, i.e. investigadores, professores e alunos.
- Biomechanical Characterization of Comfort Footwear using Gait AnalysisPublication . They are usually preferred mainly by elder, overweighed or people with feet problems [2]. It is known that the shoe can modify gait behavior [3]. The purpose of this study was to evaluate posture and gait by comparing barefoot and shoe wearing circumstances to assess the real effect of the comfort footwear under study.
- A comprehensive VISIR bibliographical referencePublication . Silva, Mariana Miguel; Fidalgo, André; Marques, Maria Arcelina; Alves, Gustavo R.; Salah, Razwan M.; Jacob, Frederico L.VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality) is a remote laboratory environment in use in research and academic institutions since 2001. This paper presents a comprehensive VISIR bibliographical reference, including a performance analysis, which reviews the publication data and the citation indexes, and a science mapping, that presents the cognitive structure. The procedure to retrieve, aggregate, process, and analyze data is based on documented sources and is also presented in the article, including some comments on specific issues faced while applying the proposed methodology. The paper characterizes the publication evolution over time, the most prolific authors and their networks, the main research topics, the most frequent sources, and the most cited documents. The available results show a mature and evolving collaborative network and an expansion trend that allows predicting that VISIR is not only the source of many academic and applied research publications, but also a popular and continuously developing remote laboratory and the basis of a very active community.
- Currently used systems of dental posts for endodontic treatmentPublication . Machado, Joana; Almeida, Paulo; Fernandes, Sampaio; Marques, Maria Arcelina; Vaz, MárioAn advanced stage of a tooth decay promotes an extremely damaged tooth that needs endodontic treatment to be restored. When satisfactory coronal tooth structure remains, an artificial crown can be placed without a post. On the other hand, the treatment of seriously damaged teeth often require an endodontic post. The main reason for using post is to enable rebuilding of the tooth structure prior to crown restoration. Dentists believe that endodontic posts provide a stable and solid restoration of the tooth, as well as providing strengthening of the tooth root, which constitutes the solid basis for a dental crown restoration. However, some authors reported that the strength of the tooth is directly related to the remaining dentin, and because of that, an endodontic treatment can present a higher risk of biomechanical failure. A number of different materials have been used for the manufacturing of dental posts. The fundamental posts requirements include high tensile strength, high fatigue resistance to occlusal and shear loading and a good distribution of the forces affecting the tooth root. The purpose of this article is to review the current literature and identify the various characteristics of a dental post, as well as some principles on the endodontic treatment for tooth decay.

The exponential growth in technology, even though very beneficial to all, tends to worsen their needs of expertise, having to endlessly update themselves. Engineering education has been addressing these issues, hoping to contribute to better teaching practices more aligned with engineering professional world. Students must develop the necessary competences from the beginning of their education and engage into actively learning the subjects. - Experimenting in PILAR Federation: a Common Path for the FuturePublication . The core of the PILAR project is the VISIR remote laboratory —Virtual Instruments System In Reality—. The project aims for a federation of five of the existing VISIR nodes, sharing experiments, capacity and resources among partners, and to provide access to VISIR remote lab, through PILAR consortium, to students from other educational institutions. PILAR will be the framework from which management tasks will be performed and laboratories/experiments will be shared. PILAR will also foster the Special Interest Group of VISIR under the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC) of the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE).
- Home Assistive Robot for Alzheimer's PatientsPublication . Existing assistive technologies to improve these patients’ quality of life and their caregivers are scarce given the daily challenges they face. To tackle this issue, a domestic assistive robot was developed for Alzheimer's patients – AlzheimerAlly - which encompasses the functionalities of a service robot, and a companion robot. AlzheimerAlly's functionalities involve tracking continuous monitoring of the patient's anatomical points to detect the type of movement and medication intake. The movement of the robot follows the movement of the patient. Additionally, the graphical interface allows cognitive and stimulation tests to be carried out. The medication dispenser, implemented, contains compartments, each with a LED. Finally, there is a website, which allows you to enter and access relevant data about the medication dispenser and cognitive tests. The functionalities described were thoroughly tested, demonstrating effective implementation. However, the prototype still remains subject to improvements. Although AlzheimerAlly requires improvements, it is already a significant and functional contribution to the area of care for Alzheimer's patients. This robot represents innovation and improvement in the quality of life of patients, their caregivers and healthcare professionals.
- How may teaching contribute to sustainability in a small scale but with wide use?Publication . A questionnaire was conducted in order to assess if students felt any resource productive in their learning and would like to keep it, contributing to lesser their ecological footprint. The more advantages to sustainability they recognize, the more educational resources they would like to keep using and the more favorable they are for a hybrid educational regime.
- Impact of a remote lab on teaching practices and student learningPublication . Their potential to aid students beyond their hands-on lab classes has been a matter of discussion in literature. Teachers and researchers are aware that the thorough analysis of both strengths and shortcomings of remote labs in didactical implementations may not only lead to the improvement of these resources but also of the pedagogical implications in engineering classes. The present study was carried out in a Higher Education Institution in Brazil in two different courses during three consecutive semesters where a remote lab (VISIR) addressing electric and electronic topics was implemented, yielding 471 students' academic results and opinions. These students' results (while using VISIR) cross-analysed with the course characteristics, reveal some factors teachers may tackle to foster student learning and motivation. The conclusions point to the need for VISIR interface modernization and showed it is more useful in basic courses than in more advanced ones, when dealing with classic lab experiments. Results also show that teachers' involvement plus their ability to brief students on VISIR's usefulness have a significant influence not only on students' performance but also on their perception of learning and satisfaction with the tool. In the analysed cases, the students with more learning needs seemed to be the ones who could benefit more from VISIR.
