- Buildings Sustainability: The HVAC ContributionPublication . Felgueiras, Carlos; Santos, Rute; Fonseca, Luís Miguel; Caetano, Nídia SáA very important part of the globally produced energy is consumed in buildings, being an important share frequently used in the HVAC systems. These ones are increasing both in performance and in complexity, taking advantage from the use of the recent advances in mechanical and power electronic devices, particularly in the speed variation field. However the improved efficiency only occurs while the HVAC unit is working in the conditions specified by the manufacturer, otherwise the energy consumption raises to values considerably higher than the nominal ones. The adequate maintenance enforces the system to run on its nominal performance and the contrary has undesirable impact both in the performance and in the system expected life time. Therefore, HVAC field maintenance assumes a very important role in the global building sustainability concept. This work presents some results of an incorrect use of HVAC and the associated electric energy overconsumption that can assume values 50% higher than those that occur when the installation is operated according to the adequate maintenance plan.
- Empirical Research of the ISO 9001:2015 Transition Process in Portugal: Motivations, Benefits, and Success FactorsPublication . Fonseca, Luís Miguel; Domingues, José PedroAn empirical study of more than 300 Portuguese organisations ISO 9001 certified, or in certification process, encompassing a wide range of activities sectors, was carried out. As of May 2017, 19% of the respondents already have ISO 9001:2015 certification and all the remaining one’s plan to complete the process in time. The principal reported benefits are risk-based thinking, mapping of the organisational context, and stakeholder identification. Simultaneously those were the issues that required more attention and effort to be mastered and implemented. Additionally, there is evidence that ISO 9001:2015 enhances both internal and external organisational issues and generates benefits for all the researched dimensions. Based on the respondents’ responses, organisations who claimed that external motivations were the primary drivers to ISO 9001:2015 implementation systematically rate higher all the benefits when compared with the rating ascribed by those organisations who claimed internal motivations. Moreover, it is possible to conclude that the perceived benefits from ISO 9001:2015 implementation and certification seem to be strongly influenced by two primary dimensions: the (smaller) organisation size and the (lesser) international presence.
- Exploratory Research of ISO 14001:2015 Transition among Portuguese OrganizationsPublication . Fonseca, Luís Miguel; Domingues, JoséThe purpose of this paper is the assessment of the ISO 14001:2015 transition process among Portuguese ISO 14001 certified organizations, including those that successfully have already achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification. A considerable number of the surveyed companies proceeded with the transition to the ISO 14001:2015 by introducing slight adjustments and were supported by external consultants. Nearly all of the respondent companies (97%) intend to transition until 15th September 2018. The highest ranked reported benefit is the “integrated approach with other management sub-systems” with a well-consolidated perception from the surveyed companies. This is aligned with the ISO 14001:2015 goal of improving the compatibility of management standards supported on the Annex SL. “Alignment with business strategy”, “improved top management commitment” and “improved internal and external communication” are also perceived to obtain significant benefits from ISO 14001:2015. The statistical tests carried out (Kruskal–Wallis) confirmed that the perception of some achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification benefits is dependent on the size of the organization. Concerning the motivations to proceed with certification, results suggest that there is not a particular company profile that is compelled to certify their EMS based on a specific type of motivation (Internal or External). Due to ISO 14001:2015 novelty, these exploratory results should be subjected to additional research confirmation.

- Impact of Supplier Management Strategies on the Organizational Performance of ISO 9001 Certified OrganizationsPublication . Fonseca, Luís Miguel; Lima, Vanda MarlenePurpose: The purpose of this article is to discuss the impact of Supplier orientation and the resulting Supply Chain Management (SCM) approach, on the organizational performance of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems certified organizations. Methodology/Approach: Following a literature review, a full structural conceptual model was proposed. An online survey was administered to managers of Portuguese organizations with certified ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems. Descriptive Statistics and Structural Model Equations were used to validate the proposed conceptual model. Findings: There are positive relationships between Organization Strategy and Supplier Orientation, between Supplier Orientation and Stakeholders Satisfaction, and between Stakeholders Satisfaction and Organizational Performance Orientation, supporting ISO 9001:2015. These findings provide insights that supplier orientation, mediated by stakeholder satisfaction, is an essential tool for organizational competitive sustainable advantage. Research Limitation/implication: The analysis was based on managers of ISO 9001 certified organizations perceptions, so additional studies with actual data and longitudinal studies should be useful for further validation. Originality/Value of paper: The importance of the overall organizational ecosystem is highlighted with potential impact on the more than 1 Million ISO 9001 organizations certified worldwide and in their suppliers.
- In search of Six Sigma in Portuguese SMEsPublication . Fonseca, Luís MiguelThis exploratory research aims to study the reasons for the low implementation level of Six Sigma within Portuguese Small and Medium Enterprises. The results suggest that ISO 9001 certification, and Lean Management, are still regarded as enough for company success. The descriptive analysis and the statistical tests performed led to the conclusion that there are no significant differences for the motivations not to implement Six Sigma between small and medium companies. The qualitative research with focus groups highlighted that SMEs aiming for fast improvement results focus more on Lean Management and Kaizen, by using Five S methodology, visual management at shop floor level and basic quality tools. However, there are different views concerning Six Sigma applicability and value for SMEs, suggesting the need for further in-depth research. Within this context, the edition of ISO 9001:2015 International Standard with an increased emphasis on process approach and the achievement of the quality management system objectives is a relevant opportunity for using Six Sigma to streamline processes and enhance customer satisfaction and business results.
- ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems through the Lens of Organizational CulturePublication . Fonseca, Luís MiguelBoth managers and scholars have convictions about the organizational approaches that best support organizational performance of the respective organizations and its Quality Management Systems. After a literature review of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems (including the changes introduced by the 2015 edition), Organizational Culture theories are addressed and input from a CEO´s focus group was gathered. The importance of organizational culture for the success of Quality Management Systems and the achievement of the organizational desired results is highlighted. The article advances a proposal to analyze ISO 9001 International Standard through the lens of organizational culture theories identifying a stronger open systems approach (influence of the environment, dynamic perspective, need for survival) of the 2015 ISO 9001 edition when compared with the 2008 one. This provides additional knowledge both to scholars and practitioners for a better understanding of the culture issues that can maximize ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems 2015 edition contributions to organizational enduring success.
- ISO 9001: Auditors give their verdictPublication . Fonseca, Luís Miguel; Croft, Nigel H.; Domingues, José PedroThe results of a survey we undertook of IRCA auditors show that respondents are of the opinion that the new edition of ISO 9001 is well aligned with both modern business management practices and quality principles. In addition, the results suggest that ISO 9001:2015 can provide significant added-value to the companies that choose to implement it. These summarised results, obtained as part of a wider academic research project aiming at assessing the impact of ISO 9001:2015, suggest that (according to the opinions of IRCA-certificated auditors) this new edition of the standard promotes and facilitates an improved alignment between quality and business best practices, thereby adding value to certified organisations.
- Leading Quality in the 21st Century: Profiles of Quality and Organizational Excellence ManagersPublication . Fonseca, Luís Miguel; Domingues, José Pedro; Sá, Joana dos GuimarãesTo ensure ISO 9001 remains up to date, ISO has revised the International Standard, issuing the ISO 9001:2015 edition. Research suggests that, on one hand, it promotes, facilitates, and emphasizes an improved alignment between quality and business best practices, thereby adding value to certified organizations and, on the other hand,it will require new approaches and competencies for Quality and Organizational Excellence Managers. To ascertain the competencies demanded for today Quality and Organizational Excellence Managers, a survey was held amidst ISO 9001 certified organizations, from different sizes, and across all activity sectors, in Portugal. The results highlight that “the knowledge of culture and the organizational process” is the most highly required competency and skill for today’s Quality and Organizational Excellence Managers. The master of the quality systems (Quality management soft factors: e.g. ISO 9001) and the quality tools & techniques (Quality engineering hard factors: basic and advance quality tools, improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma and Kaizen) are also of critical importance. The statistical tests performed to ascertain the statistical significance of the differences between the two groups of respondents (Quality and Organizational Excellence Managers and CEOs) shows no evidence of statistical differences between the perceptions of the two groups concerning the most desirable skills and competencies that a Quality and Organizational Excellence Manager should reveal. This research should be replicated in other countries and cultures contributing, hopefully, to better Quality and Organizational Managers that can successfully lead the 21st-century organizations.
