- Burden on informal caregivers of individual with Neuromuscular DiseasePublication . Matos, Marta; Alves, Anabela; Machado, Nuno; Fernandes, ÂngelaNeuromuscular Diseases (ND) can damage individual’s functionality, requiring the support of a caregiver. This situation can result in caregivers’ burden. Understand which characteristics are predictors of burden on informal caregivers.
- Cognitive predictors of balance in Parkinson’s diseasePublication . Fernandes, Ângela; Mendes, Andreia; Rocha, Nuno; Tavares, João Manuel R. S.Postural instability is one of the most incapacitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and appears to be related to cognitive deficits. This study aims to determine the cognitive factors that can predict deficits in static and dynamic balance in individuals with PD. A sociodemographic questionnaire characterized 52 individuals with PD for this work. The Trail Making Test, Rule Shift Cards Test, and Digit Span Test assessed the executive functions. The static balance was assessed using a plantar pressure platform, and dynamic balance was based on the Timed Up and Go Test. The results were statistically analysed using SPSS Statistics software through linear regression analysis. The results show that a statistically significant model based on cognitive outcomes was able to explain the variance of motor variables. Also, the explanatory value of the model tended to increase with the addition of individual and clinical variables, although the resulting model was not statistically significant The model explained 25-29% of the variability of the Timed Up and Go Test, while for the anteroposterior displacement it was 23-34%, and for the mediolateral displacement it was 24-39%. From the findings, we conclude that the cognitive performance, especially the executive functions, is a predictor of balance deficit in individuals with PD.
- Comparing the effects of two balance intervention programs on the center of pressure oscillation of elderly individualsPublication . Oliveira, Bibiana; Silva, Ana Sofia; Azevedo, Ricardo; Matos, Paula; Coelho, Tiago; Lopes, Daniela; Fernandes, Ângela; Portugal, Paula; Santos, RubimWith the ageign process, changes occur that compromise mobility and balance. These changes increase the risk of falls in the elderly.
- Comparing the effects of two different intervention programs on mobility, balance and risk of falls in elderly individualsPublication . Azevedo, Ricardo; Oliveira, Bibiana; Silva, Ana Sofia; Matos, Paula; Coelho, Tiago; Fernandes, Ângela; Santos, Rubim; Portugal, PaulaMobility and balance impairments are frequent in old age. Consequently, elderly individuals may present a higher risk of falling, which in turn can have dire consequences.
- Comparing the effects of two different intervention programs on the level of axiety and depression in elderly individualsPublication . Silva, Ana Sofia; Oliveira, Bibiana; Matos, Paula; Lopes, Daniela; Portugal, Paula; Coelho, Tiago; Fernandes, Ângela; Santos, RubimThroughout the process of aging, there are several changes that can cause postural instability or balance disability, increasing the number of fall in elderly.
- Effects of dual-task training on balance and executive functions in Parkinson's disease: a pilot studyPublication . Fernandes, Ângela; Rocha, Nuno; Santos, Rubim; Tavares, João Manuel R. S.The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of cognitive-motor dual-task training compared with single-task training on balance and executive functions in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Fifteen subjects, aged between 39 and 75 years old, were randomly assigned to the dual-task training group (n = 8) and single-task training group (n = 7). The training was run twice a week for 6 weeks. The single-task group received balance training and the dual-task group performed cognitive tasks simultaneously with the balance training. There were no significant differences between the two groups at baseline. After the intervention, the results for mediolateral sway with eyes closed were significantly better for the dual-task group and anteroposterior sway with eyes closed was significantly better for the single-task group. The results suggest superior outcomes for the dual-task training compared to the single-task training for static postural control, except in anteroposterior sway with eyes closed.
- Handgrip strength time profile and frailty: an exploratory studyPublication . Urbano, Diana; Restivo, Maria Teresa; Barbosa, Manuel Romano; Fernandes, Ângela; Abreu, Paulo; Chousal, Maria de Fátima; Coelho, TiagoThis study aims to explore the use of force vs. time data obtained from an isometric handgrip test to match a frailty state based on the TFI score. BodyGrip, a novel prototype system, is used for handgrip strength over 10 s time interval tests. A cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of community-dwelling elderly women was conducted. The force/time data collected from the dominant handgrip strength test, together with the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) test results, were used to train artificial neural networks. Different models were tested, and the frailty matching of TFI scores reached a minimum accuracy of 75%. Despite the small sample size, the BodyGrip system appears to be a promising tool for exploring new frailty-related features. The adopted strategy foresees ultimately configuring the system to be used as an expedite mode for identifying individuals at risk, allowing an easy, quick, and frequent person-centered care approach. Additionally, it is suitable for following up of the elderly in particular, and it may assume a relevant role in the mitigation of the increase in frailty evolution during and after the imposed isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further use of the system will improve the robustness of the artificial neural network algorithm.
