- Event planning as a sustainable development strategy for tourism destinationsPublication . Liberato, Dália; Dieguez, Teresa; Jesus, Leonor; Liberato, Pedro; Mendes, TeresaIn recent decades, events have become a new typology and alternative tourist attraction for both mature and emerging destinations. The events industry has witnessed significant growth that has highlighted the issue of its contribution to the economic development of the host territory. Festivals and events have become, in some ways, a more affordable formula for escape and entertainment. As unique tourist attractions, festivals have become a strategy of planned culture, sport, and political and business occasions: from mega-events to community festivals; from small meetings to huge conventions and competitions [1]. From this perspective, this research intends to analyze São João, a specific event that takes place in Porto, to identify the motivations of participants and visitors (tourists and residents). It also intends to understand its tradition and evolution, elements that make it unique, characteristic of the city of Porto, and already visible abroad. For data collection, a quantitative methodology was chosen, with the application of questionnaire surveys to participants in “São João”. The results highlight its crucial role as a popular event in the city of Porto, fitting the six characteristics needed to be designated as a unique and rare event; they also emphasize that the organizers need to consider the feedback provided by the participants after the event. Suggestions are made for the creation of tourist packages allusive to the festivity, with the possibility of customization according to the tastes and complementary motivations when visiting the destination: Religious Tourism, Wine Tourism, Gastronomy Tourism, Cultural and Landscape Tourism, and Literary Tourism.
- Food tourism sustainability in Portugal: a systematic literature reviewPublication . Mendes, Teresa; Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, Dália; Dieguez, Teresa; Barreira, HugoFood is one of the main tourism motivations to visit a destination. Food-related activities and experiences, and food consumption places, have, therefore, been used as unique selling propositions by tourism management destinations employing multiple marketing strategies, which are nowadays strengthened by digital branding. On the other hand, global food supply, and its supply chains sustainability, also became one of the most urgent agendas for all nations, worldwide. Concurringly, United Nations launched in 2016 the Sustainable Development Goals program that the United Nations World Travel Organization officially adopted in 2017. Although international tourism demand has been consistently increasing toward Portugal throughout this decade, being the most searched for European country in 2022, one of the main conclusions of the present research is that both national and international academy has not yet produced significant studies on this country’s food sustainability, concerning the tourism market. This paper delivers a systematic literature review on food tourism sustainability concerning tourism destination Portugal, based on a specific articles’ selection protocol. The selected articles, analyzed through a visual bibliometric networks’ software, produced three main clusters, which presented a research trend, stressing critical aspects concerning the role of regional governance in food tourism, and the still scarce academic production to this matter.
- How can technology on the automotive industry save the future?Publication . Dieguez, Teresa; Corcetti, L.; Silva, Francisco J. G.; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Ferreira, Luís PintoTransport is Europe is a biggest source of CO2, being responsible for the emission of over a quarter of all greenhouse gases. Unless transport emissions are brought under control national 2030 climate goals will be missed. To meet the 2050 Paris climate commitments cars and vans must be entirely decarbonized. This requires ending sales of cars with an internal combustion engine by 2035. Big challenges and huge efforts between all stakeholders are needed. Governments are, almost universally, unwilling to constrain demand for mobility and, in particular, car use and ownership. The future demands paradigm changes and better education for sustainable development. The present work aims to present a study on the currently used main vehicle motorization technologies, namely, the vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE), electric motors (EM), electric-hybrid vehicles (EHV) and vehicles fuel cells (VFC), regardless of the technology diffusion. The main objective of this study is to point out the best model to help reduce the amount of pollutant gas emission as well as contribute to public policy decision making. After a literature review, a Sustainability Index was applied to select a set of sixteen models of different brands and categories. The used management tool is the Hierarchy Process (AHP). After discussion of results, conclusions are presented.
- Influences and motivations of the North Portugal’s tourist regarding local accommodationPublication . Dieguez, Teresa; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Cabral, PauloNowadays, Local Accommodation is one of the main types of accommodations, not only seen in Portugal, but also worldwide. The huge growth of this subject and the strong commitment to new concepts has fostered new trends and needs in the consumer. The present study aims to identify the national tourist perception, living in the North of Portugal, in relation to local accommodation, characterizing the main influence and motivation factors in the choice of this type of accommodation in Portugal and abroad. Taking this into consideration, after a literature review, an inquiry was carried out through an online questionnaire, composed mostly of closed questions and evaluation scales, to all Portuguese living in the north of Portugal, who had travelled at least once over the past 5 years. A random sample of 239 participants was collected, between May and July 2019. The collected data was treated through the SPSS software. An exploratory descriptive analysis, an inferential analysis and a factor analysis were then conducted using the information gathered. The study seems to point out that there is a significant relationship between the national tourist’s adhesions to touristic accommodation in Portugal with the national adhesion to touristic accommodation abroad. The adhesion to local accommodation in Portugal is not related to the reasons for the trip/travel and the adhesion to local accommodation abroad, is mostly motivated by leisure. In what concerns the perception of the national tourist about touristic accommodation the location (Portugal/abroad) is not relevant.

- Open Innovation and Sustainable Development through Industry-Academia Collaboration: A Case Study of Automotive SectorPublication . Dieguez, Teresa; Pinto Ferreira, Luís; Silva, F. J. G.; Tjahjono, BennyThe purpose of this paper is to provide an insight on how companies based in Portugal and working for the automotive sector as spare-parts suppliers, uphold the notion of sustainable development and how they perceive the industry-academia collaboration as an adding value activity that improves productivity and efficiency. A qualitative study was conducted to collect empirical data by means of interviewing 29 representatives of the Portuguese automotive spare-parts manufacturers. It was found that, to a large extent, there is a significant gap between concerns, priorities and solutions amongst the respondents. The future will therefore depend on the way the stakeholders face problems, communicate and find forums for sharing ideas and build a well-developed world.
