- Análise Evolutiva dos Laboratórios OnlinePublication . Cordeiro, Raúl; Fonseca, José M.; Alves, Gustavo R.Our intention with this work is to analyze the evolution of online lab systems, from theirorigins in 1898, with the radio-controlled missile made by Nikolas Tesla,to the present day. We also propose to analyze the evolution of the severalonline labs lines of development throughout their history, in an attempt to foresee their future development, taking into consideration the factors that condition each particular line and the actual state of development. We also intend toanalyzewhy some development lines are deadand why they did not survive, especially when considering the human factors associated with each online lab system. We intend to prove that we can apply the “Origin of Species” laws in Online labs.

- Collaborative learning in a qeb-accessible workbenchPublication . Ferreira, José M.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Costa, Ricardo J.; Hine, NickWeb-based course management and delivery is regarded by many institutions as a key factor in an increasingly competitive education and training world, but the systems currently available are largely unsatisfactory in terms of supporting collaborative work and access to practical science facilities. These limitations are less important in areas where “pen-and-paper” courseware is the mainstream, but become unacceptably restrictive when student assignments require real-time teamwork and access to laboratory equipment. This paper presents a web-accessible workbench for electronics design and test, which was developed in the scope of an European IST project entitled PEARL, with the aim of supporting two main features: full web access and collaborative learning facilities.
- Combining Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Collaborative Environments with Online LabsPublication . Cordeiro, Raúl; Fonseca, José M.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Cardoso, AlbertoThis chapter discusses the issues of combining intelligent tutoring systems and collaborative environments with online labs. The scenario envisaged mimics the situation present in hands- onlaboratories where students typically work in groups (i.e. they collaborate among themselves in order to complete an experiment) and are supported by a tutor who is physically present during the lab session. Providing these conditions in situations where students perform the experiments in an online lab (virtual, remote, or hybrid) is the key aspect discussed in this chapter, namely in terms of: (1) existing examples reported in the literature, (2) main technical and pedagogical conditions associated with each combined element, and, finally, (3) challenges and benefits of combining both elements with online labs, proposing a new kind of interaction with online labs that will be essential to create the "image” of an “intelligent online tutor and adviser”.
- A Community of Practice around Online Labs in Iraq: Towards Effective Support for Academics and Educational Systems in the MENA RegionPublication . Salah, Razwan Mohmed; Alves, Gustavo R.; Talal, Shamil Kaddoury; Viegas, Clara; Guerreiro, PedroCurrently, the interest for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics disciplines in higher education has been growing through a quality improvement in curriculae, examining its impact on the educational outcomes, and ascertaining its effect on the continuous quality improvement to staff and students. Hands-on experiments with innovative instructional technologies, such as online labs, built confidence and skills of academics and students by helping them to better understand, especially in engineering and science fields. A community of practice is a group of people informally bound together by shared expertise, a set of problems, or interest in a topic and fulfils goals. In general, a community of practice focuses on sharing best practices and creating a new knowledge to advance a domain of professional practice. It informs about the appropriate activities and instructional technologies that support the education systems by making the universities a better place for developing the skills of teachers and students. The study purpose is to examine how staff and students are interested in using new instructional technologies, namely online labs, to support hands-on labs for completing their tasks. In addition, it illustrates the potential benefit of a community of practice around online labs. However, in order to facilitate the formation of a new community of practice around instructional technologies in Middle East and North Africa several presentations about online labs have been made in different universities in Iraq. Research instrument consisted of a series of questions for collecting data from the respondents by using three techniques: questionnaire, online meeting, and interview.
- Contributions to higher engineering educationPublication . Nascimento, Maria M.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Morais, Eva Virgínia Araújo; MoraisThe book focuses on teaching knowledge and principles (Higher Education) regarding professional practice of engineering (life and lifelong learning). It covers recent developments in engineering education. This book comprises the select proceedings of the conference organised by the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education. This book goes beyond the examination of the economic, culture, and social factors, which influence the education of engineers in different higher education institutions, and encompasses critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration and creativity and innovation. These are essential components of engineering education. The contents of this book are useful to researchers and professionals engaged in the re-engineering of engineering education.

Alves, Gustavo R.; Fidalgo, André; Marques, Maria Arcelina; Viegas, Clara; Felgueiras, Carlos; Costa, Ricardo J.; Lima, Natércia; Castro, Manuel; Díaz-Orueta, Gabriel; SanCristóbal-Ruiz, Elio; García-Loro, Felix; García-Zubía, Javier; Hernández-Jayo, Unai; Kulesza, Wlodek J.; Gustavsson, Ingvar; Nilsson, Kristian; Zackrisson, Johan; Pester, Andreas; Zutin, Danilo G.; Schlichting, Luis C.; Ferreira, Golberi; de Bona, Daniel D.; Pacheco, Fernando S.; da Silva, Juarez B.; Alves, João B.; Biléssimo, Simone; Pavani, Ana M.; Lima, Delberis A.; Temporão, Guilherme; Marchisio, Susana; Concari, Sonia B.; Lerro, Federico; de Arregui, Gaston S.; Merendino, Claudio; Plano, Miguel; Fernández, Rubén A.; Paz, Héctor R.; Soria, Mario F.; Gómez, Mario J.; de Almeida, Nival N.; de Oliveira, Vanderli F.; Pozzo, María I.; Dobboletta, Elsa; Bertramo, BrendaExperimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alter-natives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote labs, and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online labs. Sim-ilarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote labs require some ef-fort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration sev-eral factors that affect their adoption (i.e. cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e. benefit). This chapter analyses these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large num-ber of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an ex-ample in the area of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, based on a remote lab named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin-American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project2, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.
