| dc.description.abstract | Este relatório de estágio, elaborado no âmbito da Prática de Ensino Supervisionada do Mestrado de Ensino em Inglês no 1º ciclo da Educação Básica, é o resultado de um estudo de caso realizado em duas escolas básicas no Porto, que teve como objetivo investigar os momentos da utilização da língua materna nas aulas de inglês do 1º ciclo e as funções exercidas dentro da sala de aula, bem como as perspetivas dos alunos e dos professores acerca do papel e da importância do mesmo. O relatório recorreu ao vasto corpo de investigação disponível para examinar os principais argumentos contra e a favor do uso da L1 no contexto EFL (English as a Foreign Language) com o objetivo de delinear as funções estratégicas que o português pode exercer em sala e oferecer uma reflexão mais profunda sobre os diferentes fatores que influenciam a complexa dinâmica do ensino de inglês no 1º ciclo da educação básica em Portugal, como a organização das escolas e a integração do professor de inglês nas mesmas, a gestão e tamanho das turmas, além da idade dos alunos, seus conhecimentos prévios, nível de proficiência e motivação/interesse nas aulas, entre outros. Para fundamentar estes objetivos investigativos e oferecer uma contribuição ao corpo de investigação existente, o estudo de caso recolheu, entre outubro de 2023 e janeiro de 2024, dados qualitativos através de inquéritos por questionário aos alunos, grelhas de observação preenchidas pelos professores, e um inquérito por entrevista realizado junto da professora cooperante do estágio. | pt_PT |

| dc.description.abstract | This internship report, written as part of the Supervised Teaching Internship of the Master's in English Teaching in the 1st cycle of Basic Education, is the result of a case study carried out in two primary schools in Porto, which aimed to investigate the instances of Portuguese use in English classes in the 1st cycle and its respective functions in the classroom, as well as gather student and teacher perspectives regarding its role and importance. The report has drawn on the vast body of research available to examine the main arguments for and against the use of L1 in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context, aiming to outline the strategic roles that Portuguese can play in the classroom and offering a deeper reflection on the different factors that influence the complex dynamics of teaching English at primary level in Portugal, such as the organisation of the schools and their inclusion of English teachers, the management and size of the groups, as well as the students’ ages, their previous knowledge, level of proficiency and motivation/interest, amongst others. In order to substantiate these research objectives and offer a contribution to the existing body of research, the case study collected, from October 2023 to January 2024, qualitative data from student questionnaire surveys, observation grids filled out by the teachers, and an interview survey developed with the internship cooperating teacher. | pt_PT |
