Abstract(s)

This internship report, written as part of the Supervised Teaching Internship of the Master's in English Teaching in the 1st cycle of Basic Education, is the result of a case study carried out in two primary schools in Porto, which aimed to investigate the instances of Portuguese use in English classes in the 1st cycle and its respective functions in the classroom, as well as gather student and teacher perspectives regarding its role and importance. The report has drawn on the vast body of research available to examine the main arguments for and against the use of L1 in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context, aiming to outline the strategic roles that Portuguese can play in the classroom and offering a deeper reflection on the different factors that influence the complex dynamics of teaching English at primary level in Portugal, such as the organisation of the schools and their inclusion of English teachers, the management and size of the groups, as well as the students’ ages, their previous knowledge, level of proficiency and motivation/interest, amongst others. In order to substantiate these research objectives and offer a contribution to the existing body of research, the case study collected, from October 2023 to January 2024, qualitative data from student questionnaire surveys, observation grids filled out by the teachers, and an interview survey developed with the internship cooperating teacher.
