Abstract(s)
Alternative tourism typologies to massification and related to physical activity and contact with nature followed the global trends of growth in the economic activity of tourism, until the disease pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, COVlD-19, emerged. This infectious, easily transmitted disease has had an unprecedented impact on tourism on a global scale. The general objective of this dissertation is to study the impact of COVlD-19 on outdoor tourism in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology was adopted, due to the need to ask questions of a descriptive and interpretive nature. Thus, semi-structured interviews were carried out with tourist entertainment companies located in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The results obtained point towards a high autonomous visitation, sometimes inappropriate and harmful to the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The seasonality of demand for the Peneda-Gerês National Park and for outdoor activities is quite pronounced, with a peak in demand only in the summer months, which is reflected in the size of the companies that provide the activities (small and medium-sized companies and micro-enterprises). Soft activities are very popular in the Park, as are water contact activities, regardless of their classification. The mass demand in some parts of the Park, in the summer months, accentuated by COVlD-19, causes residues that can jeopardize the Park's biodiversity, one of the main motivations for those who seek it. Contrary to the general panorama, on a national and global scale, COVlD-19 did not have a devastating impact on the tourism sector in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Despite the existence of drops in demand, due to international restrictions on circulation, to lockdowns, which forced temporary closures, tourist entertainment companies survive and, in general, in the summer, they have more demand than in the pre-pandemic years. The future of the Peneda-Gerês National Park will have a new chapter with the adoption of the co- management model, in 2022, which will face challenges related to seasonality and mass demand in the tourism sector.
