Cyanobacteria are a group of photosynthetic microorganisms known for their high adaptability and resistance to various environmental conditions. These microorganisms are currently widely studied for their biotechnological potential and high commercial value. Numerous studies have emphasized the impact of abiotic factors on pigment production by cyanobacteria, particularly the quality of light. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of light quality on phycobiliproteins (PBPs) production by marine and freshwater cyanobacteria strains. The cyanobacterial strains were obtained from the Blue Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology Culture Collection (LEGE-CC) and cultivated in Z8 medium. Strains were exposed to different light colours (white, red, blue and green) in a multi-cultivator for 10 days. Biomass was collected by centrifugation and freeze-dried. Aqueous extracts were prepared through cell rupture by freeze-thaw cycles (-20ºC and 25ºC, respectively). The PBPs content was measured spectrophotometrically, according to Bennett and Bogorad (1973)1. In general, the results demonstrate that most strains exhibited higher pigment yields under white light, with PBPs content ranging from 10 µg/mL to 350 µg/mL. Regarding coloured lights, red light was the most effective in enhancing PBPs production, with high yields across several strains. The LEGE 16657 strain responded positively to all lights in terms of PBP production, with the exception of blue light, which only increased total PBP production in the LEGE 11425 strain. Overall, this study suggests that light quality is a critical parameter to be controlled in cyanobacteria cultivation for maximising PBPs production. Results also highlight the strain-specific nature of chromatic acclimation, even within the same genus, and underscores the importance of characterising spectral responses at the strain level when optimising pigment production.eng
