O acesso à justiça é um direito consolidado de todo e qualquer cidadão, mas o que sucede quando alguém recorre à justiça num país cuja língua oficial não domina? Apesar de o Código do Processo Penal português e equivalentes nos demais Estados-membro da UE contemplarem a necessidade de um tradutor-intérprete em situações específicas, nem sempre estas medidas se verificaram suficientes ou eficazes. Surge, assim, o projeto da Diretiva 2010/64/EU relativa ao Direito à Interpretação e Tradução em Processo Penal,cuja transposição devia estar concluída até 2013. O objetivo deste trabalho é perceber que medidas foram tomadas e o que poderá ter mudado ao longo dos dez anos de implementação da diretiva, bem como comparar os casos específicos de Portugal e França. Os resultados obtidos permitiram retirar algumas conclusões quanto à a importância da profissão de tradutor e intérprete, bem como sobre a formação e oportunidades oferecidas em cada país em análise.
