Abstract(s)
Nowadays our society struggles with an arduous task fighting a deadly virus which emerged by the end of 2019, named COVID-19. One of the most affected professional groups were the healthcare workers considering how much of a major group risk they were in the front line. Therefore, it is fundamental to scrutinize and understand how they act and respond to these new challenges. The question “What’s the level of mental health, burnout, coping strategies and perceived social support of healthcare workers in Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic?” guided the present study. Thereby, we intended to analyze the main topics regarding Mental Health’s issues of the healthcare workers embodied in this sample during the pandemic period, such as levels of Depression, Anxiety, Stress and Burnout, as well as Stress Moderators, in particularly, Coping Styles, Social Support and other relevant moderators to the actual investigation. In order to refine this study, a quantitative and transversal methodology was used with descriptive, correlated, predictive and comparative analyses. The data were collected by an online questionnaire held in Google Forms, where 203 answers were obtained. The data analysis was accomplished by using the IBM-SPSS (version 26.0). The results reveal that being unmarried, childless, with a non-managerial post and no experience represents higher values on the mental health scale (DASS-21) and burnout scale (MBI-HSS). Additionally, the DASS-21 and its dimensions scores in this study were considered normal, the sample presented Burnout symptoms, high scores on the Social Support scale (MSPSS) and the coping styles widely used were adaptative such as Planning, Active Coping and Acceptance. In conclusion, after one year since the beginning of the pandemic, this investigation demonstrates that the healthcare workers reported normal levels regarding mental health and symptoms of burnout, whereas social support was revealed to be higher as the adaptative coping strategies were manifestly used more frequently.
