Abstract(s)
This study examines the applicability and reintegration of classical vocal methods within the contemporary context of specialized music education in Portugal, with particular focus on the technical and expressive legacy of Belcanto. The aim is to clarify this concept – often surrounded by ambiguity – by highlighting it not only as a historical vocal style, but as a structured, functional, and pedagogically relevant technique. The research adopted a qualitative and descriptive approach, based on the analysis of questionnaires distributed to voice teachers across various regions of the country. Its main objective was to assess the level of knowledge, use, and pedagogical appreciation of classical vocal methods in current teaching practices, as well as to explore perceptions and attitudes towards their integration. The results reveal a frequently fragmented understanding of the Belcanto concept and an inconsistent application of traditional methods, suggesting a gap between the theoretical discourse found in specialized literature and actual classroom practice. The study concludes with an appeal for greater pedagogical awareness and intentionality, emphasizing the enduring value of historical methods as foundations for sustainable, coherent, and artistically meaningful vocal education.
