Abstract(s)
This intervention project, carried out in the form of a workshop, targets the Jazz Choir of the Porto Music Conservatory and aims to explore the pedagogical potential of oral tradition methods through learning a jazz arrangement - authored by the master's student - of traditional Azorean repertoire, without the use of sheet music. Given the scarce presence of traditional Azorean (or Portuguese) repertoire in music education curricula and the central role of sheet music in the music learning process, this experience is considered higly enriching for all involved. Through complementary intervention projects in the Hip-hop field, where some students from the Conservatory of Music of Porto were guided by the master's student in creating an original piece (without sheet music), followed by the organization of a Hip hop event where rappers were accompanied by a Jazz combo, this work aims to bridge between the traditional and the modern, illuminated by the oral tradition methods common to these three major realms: Traditional Azorean Music, Jazz and Hip hop.
