Stigma represents a social problema, with relevant consequences in the lives of people with mental illness. This study aimed to characterize the stigma and discriminatory behavior towards people with mental health problems in the population residing in the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP). An online questionnaire servey was carried out in the population residing in the AMP, aged over 18 years (N=3980), using the Reported and Intended Behavior Sclae (RIBS). The results point to positive behaviors and a low level of stigmatizing attitudes in the participants. The following factos were identified as mediators of stigma in this population: age, education, employment status, profession, and diagnosis of mental illness. Stigma and discriminatory behavior were low in the population residing in the AMP. It was verified that contact with people with mental health problems is associated with the intended behaviors. Therefore, the figt against stigma and discrimination must be carried out based on structered planning, which includes scientific evidence, social and health policies, and the recommendation of interventions.pt_PT
