This study aimed to analyse the impact of formal caregivers’ mental health on the quality of care provided to older people in an institutional context. A case study was carried out in a private social solidarity institution in Porto, using a mixed-method, descriptive and exploratory approach. Thirteen Direct Action Assistants (AAD) participated, completing a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scales. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using thematic categorical content analysis. The results showed that most participants did not present clinically relevant depressive symptoms, although 46.2% reported moderate or severe anxiety levels. The qualitative analysis highlighted risk factors such as physical overload, interpersonal conflicts and lack of relational time, as well as protective factors including intrinsic motivation, acknowledgement, spirituality and coping strategies. It is concluded that the mental health of formal caregivers significantly influences the quality of care provided. The study confirms the applicability of the Job Demands-Resources model, emphasising the need for organisational, training and individual intervention strategies that strengthen available resources, promote professional well-being and ensure more humanised care.
