Abstract(s)
Construction is responsible for a considerable part of carbon dioxide emissions, which allows us to say that there is a sustainability problem related to Civil Engineering works. This growing concern has led to the creation of methods to assess the environmental impacts caused by products and systems. So that there is independence and equality for all developers responsible for the construction, several indicators and certifications are defined both at national level (LiderA and SBTOOLPT) and international (BREEAM and LEED). These certifications focus on Life Cycle Assessment to assess the environmental behavior of buildings, encouraging responsible teams to make more sustainable decisions and, consequently, reduce the ecological footprint of the construction. Conducting Life Cycle Assessment in construction is a complex process, bringing together Civil Engineering and environmental concepts. This process requires carrying out specific calculations of the Carbon Footprint of materials, an area that civil engineers are not trained in. There is also the difficulty that most materials do not have tabulated values relative to their Carbon Footprint. In this sense, this dissertation presents a methodology based on two processes: an Expedited Method and a Detailed Method. The first is based on querying tables and helps to gather information for the Detailed Method. The Detailed Method is a more complex process that uses an online Life Cycle Assessment platform, called One Click LCA. This methodology is applied in a Civil Engineering work in Valadares, Vila Nova de Gaia, which was monitored for 4 months.
