  • Students’ perceptions about assessment using an e-learning platform

    ISCAP’s Information Systems Department is composed of about twenty teachers who have, for several years, been using an e-learning environment (Moodle) combined with traditional assessment. A new e-assessment strategy was implemented recently in order to evaluate a practical topic, the use of spreadsheets to solve management problems. This topic is common to several courses of different undergraduate degree programs. Being e-assessment an outstanding task regarding theoretical topics, it becomes even more challenging when the topics under evaluation are practical. In order to understand the implications of this new type of assessment from the viewpoint of the students, questionnaires and interviews were undertaken. In this paper the analysis of the questionnaires are presented and discussed.
  • Portuguese social solidarity cooperatives between recovery and resilience in the context of covid-19: preliminary results of the COOPVID Project

    Covid-19 posed several challenges to all organisations in general and to social solidarity cooperatives in particular. However, the challenges faced by these cooperatives have unique features arising from their special characteristics compared to other types of cooperatives. Therefore it is vital to study these challenges and the impacts of covid-19. This study has as main goal to understand those challenges and their impact. An exploratory study was undertaken by applying 11 interviews to 11 social solidarity cooperatives. The cooperatives were chosen to be heterogeneous among the existent cooperatives in Portugal. This study corresponds to the first phase of a project that is still underway. This article presents the main results of the content analysis of the data collected from the interviews. Data show cooperatives could promptly adapt and continue their mission under pressure from the pandemic despite the first difficulties encountered in a new and unknown situation, showing a capacity to adapt and serve their members. However, these members were also submitted to several increasing and new challenges. The adaptations were possible due to legal changes in the work organisation law, from layoff to telework, government support involving financial programs, VAT, and other tax relaxation, as well as due to human resources reorganisation and the cooperatives’ staff positive attitude towards the difficulties (both leaders and general workers). Differences between the social solidarity cooperatives under study concerning digital technologies showed that those already having some infrastructure had minor adapting difficulties.
  • Data mining languages for business intelligence

    Desde que Lunh usou, pela primeira vez, em 1958, o termo Business Intelligence (BI), grandes transformações se operaram na área dos sistemas e t ecnologias de informação e, em especial, na área dos sistemas de apoio à decisão. Atualmente , os sistemas de BI são amplamente utilizados nas organizações e a sua importância est ratégica é largamente reconhecida. Estes sistemas apresentam-se como essenciais para um comp leto conhecimento do negócio e como uma ferramenta insubstituível no apoio à tomada de decisão. A divulgação das ferramentas de Data Mining (DM) tem vindo a aumentar na área do BI, assim como o reconhecimento da relevância da sua utilização nos sistemas de BI emp resariais. As ferramentas de BI são ferramentas amigáveis, ite rativas e interativas, permitindo aos utilizadores finais um acesso fácil. Desta forma, é possível ao utilizador final manipular diretamente os dados, tendo assim a possibilidade d e extrair todo o valor para o negócio neles contido. Um dos problemas apontados na utilização d o DM na área do BI prende-se com o facto de os modelos de DM serem, em geral, demasiado comp lexos para que os utilizadores de negócio os possam manipular diretamente, contrariam ente ao que ocorre com as outras ferramentas de BI. Neste contexto, foi identificado como problema de i nvestigação a não existência de ferramentas de BI que possibilitem ao utilizador de negócio a m anipulação direta dos modelos de DM e, consequentemente, não possibilitando extrair todo o valor potencial neles contidos. Este aspeto reveste-se de particular importância num universo e mpresarial no qual a concorrência é cada vez mais forte e no qual o conhecimento do negócio, das variáveis envolvidas e dos potenciais cenários representam um papel fundamental para as o rganizações poderem concorrer num mercado extremamente exigente. Considerando que os sistemas de BI assentam, maiori tariamente, sobre sistemas operacionais que utilizam sobretudo o modelo relacional de bases de dados, a investigação efetuada inspirou- se nos conceitos ligados ao modelo relacional de ba ses de dados e nas linguagens a ele associadas em particular as linguagens Query-By-Exa mple (QBE). Estas linguagens têm uma forte componente de interactividade, são amigáveis e permitem iteratividade e são amplamente utilizadas em ambiente de negócio pelos utilizadore s finais. Têm vindo a ser desenvolvidos esforços no sentido d o desenvolvimento de padrões e normas na área do DM, sendo dada grande relevância ao tema da s bases de dados indutivas. Estes conceitos serviram, igualmente, de inspiração a est a investigação. Apesar da importância destas linguagens de DM, elas não estão orientadas para os utilizadores finais em ambientes de negócio. Ligando os conceitos relacionados com as linguagens QBE e com as linguagens de DM, foi concebida e implementada uma linguagem de DM para B I, à qual foi dado o nome QMBE. Esta nova linguagem é por natureza amigável, iterativa e interativa, isto é, apresenta as mesmas características que as ferramentas de BI habituais permitindo aos utilizadores finais a manipulação direta dos modelos de DM e, deste modo, aceder a todo o valor potencial desses modelos com todos as vantagens que daí poderão advi r. Utilizando um protótipo de um sistema de BI, a linguagem foi implementada, testada e aval iada conceptualmente. Verificou-se que a linguagem possui as propriedades desejadas, a saber , é amigável, iterativa, interativa. Finalmente, a linguagem foi avaliada por utilizador es finais que já tinham experiência anterior na utilização de DM em contexto de BI. Verificou-se qu e na ótica destes utilizadores a utilização da linguagem apresenta vantagens em relação à utilizaç ão tradicional de DM no âmbito do BI.
  • Human Mobility Restrictions and COVID-19 Infection Rates: Analysis of Mobility Data and Coronavirus Spread in Poland and Portugal

    This study examines the possibility of correlation between the data on human mobility restrictions and the COVID-19 infection rates in two European countries: Poland and Portugal. The aim of this study is to verify the correlation and causation between mobility changes and the infection spread as well as to investigate the impact of the introduced restrictions on changes in human mobility. The data were obtained from Google Community Mobility Reports, Apple Mobility Trends Reports, and The Humanitarian Data Exchange along with other reports published online. All the data were organized in one dataset, and three groups of variables were distinguished: restrictions, mobility, and intensity of the disease. The causal-comparative research design method is used for this study. The results show that in both countries the state restrictions reduced human mobility, with the strongest impact in places related to retail and recreation, grocery, pharmacy, and transit stations. At the same time, the data show that the increase in restrictions had strong positive correlation with stays in residential places both in Poland and Portugal.

    Like many other higher educat ion schools, ISCAP`s population has grown at a rate of almost 100% in the end of the twentieth century. Its administrative structures were reinforced, but it was not in the same proportion. Face to face with the inability to resolve the problem, the administration decided to implement a computer based system, available in the Internet. In a first stage, in 1997, the system was implemented as a services support. The next stage, in 1999, proposes to increase student services quality. A project that aims to bring student services available on the Internet begins to be developed.
  • Planning and implementing a new assessment strategy using an e-learning platform

    One of the most difficult issues of e-Learning is the students’ assessment. Being this an outstanding task regarding theoretical topics, it becomes even more challenging when the topics under evaluation are practical. ISCAP’s Information Systems Department is composed of about twenty teachers who have been for several years using an e-learning environment (at the moment Moodle 2.3) combined with traditional assessment. They are now planning and implementing a new e-learning assessment strategy. This effort was undertaken in order to evaluate a practical topic (the use of spreadsheets to solve management problems) common to shared courses of several undergraduate degree programs. The same team group is already experienced in the assessment of theoretical information systems topics using the b-learning platform. Therefore, this project works as an extension to previous experiences being the team aware of the additional difficulties due to the practical nature of the topics. This paper describes this project and presents two cycles of the action research methodology, used to conduct the research. The first cycle goal was to produce a database of questions. When it was implemented in order to be used with a pilot group of students, several problems were identified. Subsequently, the second cycle consisted in solving the identified problems preparing the database and all the players to a broader scope implementation. For each cycle, all the phases, its drawbacks and achievements are described. This paper suits all those who are or are planning to be in the process of shifting their assessment strategy from a traditional to one supported by an e-learning platform.
  • KDD, SEMMA and CRISP-DM: a parallel overview

    In the last years there has been a huge growth and consolidation of the Data Mining field. Some efforts are being done that seek the establishment of standards in the area. Included on these efforts there can be enumerated SEMMA and CRISP-DM. Both grow as industrial standards and define a set of sequential steps that pretends to guide the implementation of data mining applications. The question of the existence of substantial differences between them and the traditional KDD process arose. In this paper, is pretended to establish a parallel between these and the KDD process as well as an understanding of the similarities between them.

    Os Algoritmos são técnicas de optimização, baseadas na selecção natural, que se têm vindo a afirmar nos últimos anos. Existem já diversas aplicações a situações reais, com resultados bastante bons. Actualmente, com a popularização de pacotes de software para paralelização de aplicações, como o PVM, surge como natural a sua utilização na paralelização dos algoritmos genéticos. Existem vários modelos para a paralelização de algoritmos genéticos.
  • Cooperatives and the use of artificial intelligence: a critical view

    Digital Transformation (DT) has become an important issue for organisations. It is proven that DT fuels Digital Innovation in organisations. It is well-known that technologies and practices such as distributed ledger technologies, open source, analytics, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI) enhance DT. Among those technologies, AI provides tools to support decision-making and automatically decide. Cooperatives are organisations with a mutualistic scope and are characterised by having participatory, cooperative governance due to the principle of democratic control by the members. In a context where DT is here to stay, where the dematerialisation of processes can bring significant advantages to any organisation, this article presents a critical reflection on the dangers of using AI technologies in cooperatives. We base this reflection on the Portuguese cooperative code. We emphasise that this code is not very different from the ones of other countries worldwide as they are all based on the Statement of Cooperative Identity defined by the International Cooperative Alliance. We understand that we cannot stop the entry of AI technologies into the cooperatives. Therefore, we present a framework for using AI technologies in cooperatives to avoid damaging the principles and values of this type of organisations.
