  • Risco de Diabetes Mellitus numa população escolar
Publication . Neves, Fabiana; Amorim, Manuela; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; CondeƧo, Jorge; Duarte, M.; Ferreira, JosƩ
  • Microbiological characterization of thermal waters
Publication . Machado, Adriana; Amorim, Manuela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Condeço, Jorge; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; Augusto, António
Thermal waters are used for disease prevention or treatment, for rehabilitation or welfare. The health risks associated with the use of these waters depends not only on the nature of the waters, but also on the manner of its use and the immune status of users. Exposure to microorganism scan occur through inhalation, ingestion or contact. The related severity and diversity of diseases leads to the verification of bacteriological standards established by law in order to ensure its quality and safety.
  • Telemonitoring in heart failure patient management
Publication . Silva, Patrƭcia; Gomes, Paulo Veloso; CondeƧo, Jorge; Curado, Henrique; Veloso, Rita
Heart failure is a highly prevalent clinical syndrome, associated with high costs to the national health system and with a negative impact on patients’ quality of life. In order to reduce mortality, the rate of hospitalisations and improve quality of life, the empowerment of the patient for self-care from self-monitoring of signs and symptoms, taking medication, education about the disease, is a pillar of the treatment so that they can recognise signs of exacerbation of the disease in time and resort to health services early. Mobile health apps (mHealthh) have shown promise as a tool to engage and promote patient self-care, decreasing mortality and hospitalisations. However, to improve outcomes, more robust studies are needed on the development of the applications with regard to their contents, functions and usability, so as to overcome the obstacles to their use and ensure greater evidence of the benefits of their use.
  • Antipsychotic therapy and biochemical laboratory profile characterization of a sample of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia
Publication . Amorim, Manuela; Moreira, A.; Condeço, Jorge; Monteiro, Pedro; Marques, António; Summavielle, Teresa
Schizophrenia (SCZ) patients are reported to present significant abnormalities in lipid and glucose metabolism, that increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, possibly induced by antipsychotic therapy (APT) and lifestyle.
  • Microbiological monitoring of surfaces and food handlers
Publication . Barros, Sílvia; Amorim, Manuela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Condeço, Jorge; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; Augusto, António
Every year, foodborne diseases affects about 48 million people in the United States alone, usually associated with microbiological infection or intoxication The increase in demand for catering services has contributed to cases increase (Kleter & Marvin, 2009; Lund, A.C. Baird-Parker, 2000; Newell et al., 2010). These data show the importance of quality assurance from food production to the consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account special care towards the environment (air), facilities, equipment, surfaces, utensils and handlers throughout the processing by cleaning processes and disinfection (Kleter & Marvin, 2009).
  • Microbiological quality of pre-cooked food: Escherichia coli and coagulase positive Staphylococcus prevalence
Publication . David, Bruna; Amorim, Manuela; Ferreira, Stephanie; Condeço, Jorge; Mota, Sandra; Moreira, Anabela; Augusto, António
Recent changes in society’s lifestyle lead food industries to invest in the production of pre - cooked foods for an increasingly demanding consumer, who values its easiness and convenience.(Oliveira, 2009).These new eating habits increased foodborne diseases incidence which represents a public health problem (Newell et al., 2010). The main genera of bacteria responsible for foodborne diseases are: Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Vibrio, Bacillus, Clostridium, Listeria, Shigella and Campylobacter(Newell et al., 2010). To ensure the microbiological food quality, companies must implement a hazards and critical control points guidelines(Bolton & Maunsell, 2004).
  • m-Health system for the self-management of patients with heart failure
Publication . Silva, Patrícia; Gomes, Paulo Veloso; Condeço, Jorge; Marques, António; Curado, Henrique; Veloso, Rita; Pereira, Javier
Increasingly, the use of technology is emerging as a tool to support health care. The new information and telecommunications technologies have triggered a new paradigm in health: in access, availability and management of information. Telemonitoring interventions in patients with heart failure have been shown to be cost effective in reducing the rate of hospitalisations and mortality. The development of m-Health applications focused on the centralization of care in patients, considering the perspectives of different stakeholders, promises results not only in clinical (mortality and morbidity) but also in patient outcome reports (quality of life and self-care). This work presents an integrated information system for telemonitoring and self-management of patients with heart failure.
