- Exploring the Cinematic Legacy of the Cold War: "Rambo" as a Propaganda ToolPublication . Araújo, Alexandra Ribeiro; Santos, Clara Maria Laranjeira Sarmento eThis dissertation intends to prove that the three movies of the “Rambo” franchise produced in the 1980s decade were used as a Cold War propaganda tool. With that being stated, there is also the presentation of the concepts of Popular Culture and Mass Culture as well as the historical and political context of the Cold War, with a chapter specifically dedicated to cinema during this conflict. The object of study of this dissertation is the series of three movies, “First Blood” (1982), “Rambo: First Blood Part II” (1985), and “Rambo III” (1988), that will be used as a standpoint to analyse the Vietnam War, the Afghan War, Rambo’s character as the all-American hero, and the Soviets as the villains, all of them considered as elements of Cold War propaganda. Themes such as the role of action movies in the construction of stereotypes as well as the massification of the War during the 1980s are also going to be explored. Besides this, the dissertation also tries to understand whether Cinema during the Cold War can be considered as a vehicle of intercultural communication. In order to achieve this purpose, the methodology used is based on qualitative methods of investigation. To elaborate this work, the study of articles, books, images, movies, newspaper articles, and other existing dissertations on the topic was fundamental.
