- O cinema do SPN/SNI – o ideal de Ferro, a realidade de chumboPublication . Ribeiro, CarlaFramework aims: To analyze Ferro’s political and aesthetic actions towards the portuguese cinematography. • To grasp the contours that its “Política do Espírito”(“Policy of the Spirit") has taken in the cinematographic field. • To understand what were the outcomes attained - the reception and the resistances to his purposes
- Bacterial cooperation controlled by mobile elements: kin selection and infectivity are part of the same processPublication . Rankin, D. J.; Mc Ginty, S. E.; Nogueira, Teresa; Touchon, M.; Taddei, F.; Rocha, E. P. C.; Brown, S. P.
- Work-in-progress on a thin IEEE1451.0-architecture to implement reconfigurable weblab infrastructuresPublication . Costa, Ricardo J.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Zenha-Rela, MárioInstitutions have been creating their own specific weblab infrastructures. Usually, they use distinct software and hardware architectures comprehending instruments and modules (I&M) able to be parameterized but difficult to be shared. These aspects are impairing their widespread in education, since collaboration between institutions, in developing and sharing resources, is still low. To handle both aspects, this paper proposes the adoption of the IEEE1451.0 Std. with FPGA technology for creating reconfigurable weblab infrastructures. It is suggested the adoption of an IEEE1451.0 infrastructure with compatible instruments, described in Hardware Description Languages (HDL), to be reconfigured in FPGA-based boards. Besides an overview of the IEEE1451.0 Std., this paper presents a solution currently under development which seeks to enable the reconfiguration and the remote control of weblab infrastructures using a set of IEEE1451.0 HTTP commands.
- The VISIR Open Lab Platform 5.0 - an architecture of a federation of remote laboratoriesPublication . Gustavsson, Ingvar; Nilsson, Kristian; Zackrisson, Johan; García-Zubía, Javier; Alves, Gustavo R.; Hernández-Jayo, Unai; Costa, Ricardo J.This paper outlines a new laboratory learning infrastructure based on the VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality) Open Lab Platform, which is an architecture for opening hands-on instructional laboratories for remote access 24/7 with preserved context. The aim is to embrace such laboratories in which telemanipulators can be used to remotely set up and/or start experiments and where the outcome can be observed remotely using instruments, video and/or audio transmission. As hands-on laboratories, VISIR ones can be used for exploring nature and for training laboratory workmanship. The current release (4.1) of the VISIR Open Lab platform can be used for opening electronics laboratories and laboratories for mechanical vibration experiments for remote access. Other subject fields will follow. So far, seven VISIR laboratories are online globally. The coming VISIR Open Lab Platform 5.0 will offer new functionality and will support a federation of VISIR laboratories.
- Case based, learner centered approach to pharmacotherapyPublication . Jesus, Ângelo; Cruz, Agostinho; Gomes, Maria JoãoThe incorporation of real problems into health education is seen as an effort to prepare future health professionals to meet the challenging demands of the profession, in particular, the provision of quality patient care. The founding’s of these methodology can be traced back to Dewey. The author suggested that students should be presented with real life problems and in order to discover the information required to solve them. Further more, Dewey encouraged reflection as a process that should be used when solving problems. Furthermore the author recognized that logical or analytical reflection can take place only when there is a real problem to be solved.
- A Computational Approach for Obtaining the Root Locus of Fractional SystemsPublication . Tenreiro Machado, J. A.; Galhano, AlexandraIn this paper a new method for the calculation of the root locus of fractional systems is presented. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of present day computational resources and processes directly the characteristic equation. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the method for different types of expressions.
- Forced van der Pol oscillator of complex orderPublication . Pinto, Carla; Tenreiro Machado, J. A.In this paper it is considered a complex order forced van der Pol oscillator. The complex derivative Dα±jβ, with α, β ∈ R+ is a generalization of the concept of integer derivative, where α = 1, β = 0. We compute amplitude and period values of the periodic solutions of the complex order forced van der Pol oscillator, for variation of distinct parameters such as forcing frequency, forcing amplitude and parameters α and β. We find interesting quasi-periodic motion for certain values of the forcing frequency. This type of behaviour is seen in the continuous forced van der Pol oscillator.
- Identifying Economic Periods and Crisis with Power LawPublication . Tenreiro Machado, J. A.; Duarte, Gonçalo M.; Duarte, Fernando B.Power law (PL) and Fractional Calculus are two faces of phenomena with long memory behaviour. This paper applies PL approximations to analyze different periods of the business cycle. With such purpose eight important stock market indexes, namely the CAC, DAX, Dow Jones, FTSE, HSI, IBEX,MIBTEL and SSMI are studied over time. It is observed that the PL curvefitting constitutes a good tool for separating the signal dynamics from the noise while revealing the main system characteristics. The analysis under the lens of the PL shows that the indexes have characteristics similar to those of fractional noise and it permits to identify patterns in the stock markets specific to each economic expansion period.
- DNA code analysis with fractional calculusPublication . Tenreiro Machado, J. A.; Costa, António C.; Quelhas, Maria DulceThis paper addresses the DNA code analysis in the perspective of dynamics and fractional calculus. Several mathematical tools are selected to establish a quantitative method without distorting the alphabet represented by the sequence of DNA bases. The association of Gray code, Fourier transform and Fractional calculus leads to a categorical representation of species and chromosomes.
