- An Energy Flexibility Framework on The Internet of ThingsPublication . The framework takes place in the European project Arrowhead, and aims at taking advantage of the flexibility (in time and power) of energy production and consumption offered by sets of devices, appliances or buildings, to help at solving the issue of fluctuating energy production of renewable energies. The underlying concepts are explained, the actors involved in the framework, their incentives and interactions are detailed, and a technical overview is provided. An implementation of the framework is presented, as well as the expected results of the pilots.

First, we present the notion of FlexOffers as a general mechanism for describing energy flexibility. FlexOffers can be aggregated into larger flexibility units to be used as an Arrowhead service in the virtual market of energy [1]. This is followed by two examples on how to exploit such a flexibility service in the energy management of heatpumps and a campus building. Then we present two examples on how to exploit renewable energy to provide elevator services. Next, two examples of context aware services are described – smart lighting and smart car heating, and finally it is described how the Arrowhead Framework can play a role in the optimization of municipal service systems. In the final section, we indicate future work.
- Convergence to the European Energy Policy in European countries: case studies and comparisonPublication . Teixeira, César; Albano, Michele; Skou, Arne; Dueñas, Lara Pérez; Antonacci, Francesco; Ferreira, Rodrigo; Pedersen, Keld Lotzfeldt; Scalari, SandraPurpose – Our paper aims at analyzing how different European countries cope with the European Energy Policy, which proposes a set of measures (free energy market, smart meters, energy certificates) to improve energy utilization and management in Europe. Design/methodology/approach – The paper first reports the general vision, regulations and goals set up by Europe to implement the European Energy Policy. Later on, it performs an analysis of how some European countries are coping with the goals, with financial, legal, economical and regulatory measures. Finally, the paper draws a comparison between the countries to present a view on how Europe is responding to the emerging energy emergency of the modern world. Findings – Our analysis on different use cases (countries) showed that European countries are converging to a common energy policy, even though some countries appear to be later than others In particular, Southern European countries were slowed down by the world financial and economical crisis. Still, it appears that contingency plans were put into action, and Europe as a whole is proceeding steadily towards the common vision. Research limitations/implications – European countries are applying yet more cuts to financing green technologies, and it is not possible to predict clearly how each country will evolve its support to the European energy policy. Practical implications – Different countries applied the concepts and measures in different ways. The implementation of the European energy policy has to cope with the resulting plethora of regulations, and a company proposing enhancement regarding energy management still has to possess robust knowledge of the single country, before being able to export experience and know-how between European countries. Originality/Value – Even though a few surveys on energy measures in Europe are already part of the state-of-the-art, organic analysis diagonal to the different topics of the European Energy Policy is missing. Moreover, this paper highlights how European countries are converging on a common view, and provides some details on the differences between the countries, thus facilitating parties interesting into cross-country export of experience and technology for energy management.
- ENCOURAGE architecture: support for heterogeneous smart gridsPublication . One application domain inciding heavily on the energy budget regards the energy consumption in residential and non-residential buildings. The ever increasing needs for energy, resulting from the industrialization of developing countries and from the limited scalability of the traditional technologies for energy production, raises both problems and opportunities. The problems are related to the devastating effects of the greenhouse gases produced by the burning of oil and gas for energy production, and from the dependence of whole countries on companies providing gas and oil. The opportunities are mostly technological, since novel markets are opening for both energy production via renewable sources, and for innovations that can rationalize energy usage. An enticing research effort can be the mixing of these two aspects, by leveraging on ICT technologies to rationalize energy production, acquisition, and consumption. The ENCOURAGE project aims to develop embedded intelligence and integration technologies that will directly optimize energy use in buildings and enable active participation in the future smart grid environment.The primary application domains targeted by the ENCOURAGE project are non-residential buildings (e.g.: campuses) and residential buildings (e.g.: neighborhoods). The goal of the project is to achieve 20% of energy savings through the improved interoperability between various types of energy generation, consumption and storage devices; interbuilding energy exchange; and systematic performance monitoring.
- ENCOURAGEing Results on ICT for Energy Efficient BuildingsPublication . The components of the middleware, as well as the supervisory control strategy, are overviewed, to support the presentation of the results and how they could be achieved. The main results are presented on three of the pilots of the project, a first one consisting of a single household, a second one of a residential neighborhood, and a third one in a university campus.
