- Association between calcium intake and body fat among pre-school Portuguese childrenPublication . Abreu, S.; Vale, S.; Pereira, M.; Santos, R.; Moreira, C.; Santos, P.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Mota, J.; Moreira, P.Obesity is the condition in which abnormally large body fat mass accumulates and causes a broad range of health problems. Some studies with children have reported an inverse asso ciation between dietary calcium intake and adiposity.
- Association between dairy product intake and abdominal obesity in Azorean adolescentsPublication . Abreu, S.; Santos, R.; Moreira, C.; Vale, Susana; Santos, Paula Clara; Soares-Miranda, L.; Marques, A. I.; Mota, J.; Moreira, P.Some studies have reported an inverse association between dairy product (DP) consumption and weight or fat mass loss. The objective of our study was to assess the association between DP intake and abdominal obesity (AO) among Azorean adolescents. This study was a cross-sectional analysis. A total of 903 adolescents (370 boys) aged 15--16 years was evaluated. Anthropometric measurements were collected (weight, height and waist circumference (WC)) and McCarthy’s cut-points were used to categorize WC. AO was defined when WC was X90th percentile. Adolescent food intake was assessed using a self-administered semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire and DP intake was categorized in o2 and X2 servings/day. Data were analyzed separately for girls and boys, and logistical regression was used to estimate the association between DPs and AO adjusting for potential confounders. The prevalence of AO was 54.9% (boys: 32.1% and girls: 70.7%, Po0.001). For boys and girls, DP consumption was 2.3±1.9 and 2.1±1.6 servings/day (P¼0.185), respectively. In both genders, the proportion of adolescents with WC o90th percentile was higher among individuals who reported a dairy intake of X2 servings/day compared with those with an intake o2 servings/day (boys: 71% vs 65% and girls: 36% vs 24%, Po0.05). After adjustments for confounders, two or more DP servings per day were a negative predictor of AO (odds ratio, 0.217; 95% confidence interval, 0.075 -- 0.633) only in boys. We found a protective association between DP intake and AO only in boys.
- Associations between neck circumference and adipocytokines among adolescentsPublication . Moreira, C.; Mota, J.; Abreu, S.; Lopes, L.; Agostinis, C.; Oliveira, A.; Oliveira-Santos, J.; Santos, P. C.; Santos, R.Neck circumference (NC) was recently introduced as a predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. Adipocytokines may have a key role in the development of CVD. Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between NC and adipocytokines, such as adiponectin and leptin in Portuguese adolescents.
- Committed to quality in physical activity programmes for elderly people – The customer resultsPublication . Marques, A.; Soares, P.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Santos, Paula Clara; Moreira, C.; Vale, S.; Santos, R.; Carvalho, J.There has been a growing concern in conceiving physical activity (PA) programmes for elderly people since the evidence indicates that this type of health promotion interventions may reduce the deleterious effects of the aging process. In Portugal, the Public Administration is the sector that offers the largest supply of goods and services and as such, it is the sector that must devote most attention to Quality Some studies support the EFQM Excellence Model as an operational framework for Total Quality Management. Excellent Results with respect to Performance, Customers, People and Society are achieved through Leadership driving Policy and Strategy that is delivered through People, Partnerships and Resources, as well as Processes. Consequently, the EFQM Model might be used as a self-assessment instrument, to discern the strengths of the programmes, as well as areas in which improvement can be made. The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the existence of customers’ outcomes measurement in Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people, comparing it with programmes’ characteristics and 2) to analyse the associations between the different evaluated items. Data were collected by an on-line questionnaire sent to 26 Coordinators of PA Programmes. Descriptive statistics were used in order to characterize de PA programmes and the participants’ outcome measurement items. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s Exact Test and Pearson’s Qui-square test. 57,7 % of the programmes recorded participants’ outcome measures at regular intervals. Most of them (73,3%; p 0.05) were free of charge programmes. Statistically significant associations were found between the following outcomes items: cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, balance and body composition. Portuguese PA programmes for elderly people showed a feeble attention on participants’ outcome measures, even though the measurement process represents one of the most important components of customer results from an exercise programme. Furthermore, there are significant differences between customers’ outcome measures chosen by each programme.
- Detection of exposed steel rebars based on deep-learning techniques and unmanned aerial vehiclesPublication . Santos, R.; Ribeiro, Diogo; Lopes, Patrícia; Cabral, R.; Calçada, R.In recent years deep-learning techniques have been developed and applied to inspect cracks in RC structures. The accuracy of these techniques leads to believe that they may also be applied to the identification of other pathologies. This article proposes a technique for automated detection of exposed steel rebars. The tools developed rely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based on transfer-learning using AlexNet. Experiments were conducted in large-scale structures to assess the efficiency of the method. To circumvent limitations on the proximity access to structures as large as the ones used in the experiments, as well as increase cost efficiency, the image capture was performed using an unmanned aerial system (UAS). The final goal of the proposed methodology is to generate orthomosaic maps of the pathologies or structure 3D models with superimposed pathologies. The results obtained are promising, confirming the high adaptability of CNN based methodologies for structural inspection.
- Gestational weght gain and body mass index in pre-school childrenPublication . Santos, P. C.; Vale, S.; Santos, R.; Moreira, C.; Marques, A. I.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Mota, J.To examine the association between gestational weight gain (GWG) and body mass index (BMI) in pre-school children.
- Influence of birthweight, socioeconomic status, cardio-respiratory fitness in body mass indexPublication . Vale, S.; Soares-Miranda, L.; Santos, R.; Moreira, C.; Marques, A. I.; Santos, P. C.; Aleixo, I.; Mota, J.The increasing overweight and obesity prevalence among children and adolescents may not only result in life quality prejudice but also increase obesity indexes at adult age. Perinatal factors such birthweight (BW) as well as socioeconomic factors (SES) and cardio respiratory fitness (CRF) have shown different associations with adolescents’ obesity level. Thus, the aims of the present study were to describe the prevalence of overweight/obesity (Ov/ Ob) and, to evaluate the associations of BW, SES and CRF on adolescents body mass index (BMI).
