- Análise da rotulagem de suplementos alimentares utilizados no Sistema Nervoso CentralPublication . No entanto, a crença errónea por parte dos consumidores de que estes são isentos de risco e as escassas obrigações legais requeridas para a sua entrada no mercado têm servido de alerta para a necessidade de mais investigação (Axon, Vanova, Edel, & Slack, 2017). Analisar, do ponto de vista legal e científico, a informação disponibilizada na rotulagem dos SA à base de plantas utilizados para alguns dos principais problemas associados ao sistema nervoso central (insónia, ansiedade, nervosismo e depressão), comercializados em Portugal em Farmácias Comunitárias e Ervanárias/Lojas Dietéticas.

No entanto, a crença errónea por parte dos consumidores de que estes são isentos de risco e as obrigações legais requeridas para a sua entrada no mercado têm servido de alerta para a necessidade de mais investigação. Analisar, do ponto de vista legal e científico, a informação disponibilizada na rotulagem de suplementos alimentares à base de plantas utilizados para problemas associados ao Sistema Nervoso, comercializados em Portugal. Estudo descritivo, observacional, transversal com a recolha de 44 rótulos de suplementos comercializados em Farmácias Comunitárias e em Ervanárias/Lojas Dietéticas da cidade de Vila Nova de Famalicão, entre julho e agosto de 2019, em formulário próprio. Do ponto de vista legal, a maioria dos SA analisados cumpriu as menções obrigatórias na rotulagem. Do ponto de vista científico, o nome científico das plantas foi a informação que mais frequentemente está presente na rotulagem, com 97,7%. A padronização dos extratos (29,5%), as interações (11,4%) e as reações adversas (11,4%) foram as informações menos mencionadas. Os resultados obtidos realçam a necessidade de uma maior atenção quanto às informações existentes na rotulagem dos suplementos, no sentido de permitir aos consumidores um uso informado e seguro dos produtos.

However, permanent contact between pacifier and oral microflora leads to the creation of a biofilm in the pacifier’s surface.
- Analytical methods for the detection and quantification of phenolic compounds in Melilotus indicusand Pterospartum tridentatumPublication . Cruz, José Pedro; Oliveira, Ana Isabel; Correia, PatríciaThe use of plants for therapeutic purposes has been the result of scientific advances over the last few years. Melilotus indicus and Pterospartum tridentatum belong to the third family of flowering plants, the Fabaceae. For biological, pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, a full characterization of the plants and their bioactive compounds is initially required. Description of the theoretical framework. The aim of this review is to gather information, compiling the several detection and quantification methods, the phenolic compounds identified, and their quantities present in these plants. Literature search was carried out in PubMed, Science Direct and SciELO using isolated and combined keywords "Melilotus indicus", "Pterospartum tridentatum", "Phenolic compounds", “Detection”, "Quantification", selecting studies published since 2000 that referred analytical methods for the detection and quantification of phenolic compounds in M. indicusand P. tridentatum. For M. indicus, three methods were found in the literature, only two of which quantified phenolic compounds. A total of twenty-eight compounds were identified, such as catechin and dihydroquercetin, while twenty-one were quantified, namely chlorogenic and caffeic acids. The range of quantification varied from 0.2 (hesperidin) to 7630.0 (quercetin) μg.g-1 dry weight. For P. tridentatum, eight methods were found for the characterization of phenolic compounds. A total of twenty-nine compounds were identified such as rosmarinic acid and 7-methylorobol, while twenty-one were quantified, e.g., genistein and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside. Quantification ranged from 53.2 (sissotrin) to 32200.0 (vanillic acid) μg.g-1 dry weight. These studies exhibit different methods that identify and quantify phenolic compounds in M. indicusand P. tridentatumextracts, particularly high-performance liquid chromatography, and were able to identify several classes of phenolic compounds, including hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids, flavonols, flavones, isoflavones and flavanones. However, it is necessary to develop new methods to improve the separation, identification, and quantification of phenolic compounds.

The plant produces a toxic latex with corrosive effects on the skin and mucous membranes. Furthermore, high dilutions of this latex have been used in the treatment of tumors, although the mechanisms involved in this antitumoral activity are not yet known.

In order to improve it, in a more appealing and effective way, there has been an increase in the employ of digital tools.

- Antioxidant profile of Portuguese and Spanish craft beersPublication . The scarcity of studies evaluating the antioxidant potential of CB highlights the relevance of thisstudy. In vitroevaluation of the antioxidant activity of aqueous extracts of Portuguese and Spanish CB. Experimental study using six CB with different styles: Milk Stout (EL-MS), India Pale Ale (EL-IPA, ALM-IPA), Imperial Stout (EME-IS), Oatmeal Stout (ALM-OS), Pilsner (EL-P), Munich Dunkell (B-MD) and two industrial beers, Pilsner (S-P) and Munish Dunkell (S-MD). The pH, acidity content (AC) and total phenolic compounds (TPC) were determined. The antioxidant capacity was assessed using 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) assays, expressed in concentration for 50% activity inhibition (IC50). One-way ANOVA and Student’s t-test were used for statistical analysis in GraphPad®Prism8.0 software, with a significance level of 0.05. The pH of the beers varied between 3.89±0.00-4.78±0.05 and AC between 0.13±0.01-0.44±0.01%. ALM-IPA had the highest TPC value (8.96±0.64mg gallic acid equivalents/g). IPA style presented the lower IC50values in H2O2(ALM-IPA with an IC50=23.54±1.53μg/mL, p<0.05) and ABTS (EL-IPA with an IC50=55.21±4.68μg/mL, p<0.05) assays. The industrial beers have lower TPC values compared to CB (same style, p<0.05), and lower capacity to neutralize the H2O2and ABTS radicals.For Omisore et al. (2005), samples with IC50>50μg/mL are classified as being moderately active, while samples with IC50<50μg/mL have high antioxidant capacity. Also, the results for IPA style are in line with Breda et al. (2022), in which light-colored beers had better antioxidant profiles. However, according to Silva et al. (2022) the best antioxidant profiles were associated with dark beers. The samples showed antioxidant potential, but further tests should be carried out considering the complex underlying antioxidant mechanisms.
- Aplicações nanotecnológicas tópicas com quercetinaPublication . Carvalho, Daniel; Pinho, Cláudia; Moreira, Fernando; Oliveira, Ana IsabelA quercetina, flavonoide com capacidade antioxidante, apresenta diversas atividades biológicas, relevantes no tratamento de afeções relacionadas com o stress oxidativo. Apesar de a sua aplicação se encontrar limitada, existem várias metodologias para contornar esta condicionante, como a nanotecnologia, que apresenta inúmeras vantagens. Analisar, na literatura, o progresso realizado, no desenvolvimento de nanopartículas carregadas com quercetina para aplicação cutânea. Foi realizada uma revisão clássica da literatura, utilizando isoladamente e em associação as palavras-chave “quercetin”, “nanotechnology” e “skin”, nas bases de dados PubMed e Science Direct, entre os anos de 2012 e 2022, em língua inglesa e portuguesa, tendo sido incluídos 13 artigos. Diversos nanossistemas têm sido utilizados na preparação de nanopartículas com quercetina, nomeadamente nanopartículas poliméricas e lipídicas, nanofibras e nanocristais. Em termos de caracterização, observa-se a obtenção de nanopartículas estáveis nos diversos estudos, com tamanhos entre 25,00 e 361,16 nm, potenciais zeta entre -80 e +37 mV e índices de polidispersibilidade entre 0,190 e 0,306. Várias atividades biológicas/aplicações terapêuticas foram também estudadas, como: diminuição do edema, cicatrização de feridas cutâneas e proteção celular contra o stress oxidativo. Estes resultados demonstraram os nanossistemas lipídicos estudados como potenciais alternativas quer para a aplicação tópica de quercetina, quer para o tratamento de feridas. Também as nanopartículas poliméricas demonstraram ser uma boa opção para a entrega tópica de quercetina, em particular para o tratamento de feridas, sendo que a sua funcionalização com ácido hialurónico demonstrou ser vantajosa. Além destes nanossistemas, as nanofibras, nanopartículas de óxido de titânio, nanocristais e glicerossomas demonstraram ser boas alternativas para aplicação cutânea de quercetina. Grande parte destes nanossistemas não demonstraram toxicidade para com linhas celulares cutâneas e demonstraram elevada penetrabilidade cutânea. Vários nanossistemas têm apresentando resultados promissores na utilização da quercetina, com maior direcionamento para o desenvolvimento de pensos e formulações para o tratamento de doenças cutâneas. Porém, mais estudos devem ser realizados para otimização de características e propriedades destes nanossistemas.
- Assessment of patient knowledge on medications for irritable bowel syndromePublication . It affects approximately 10-20% of the world’s population. Although not fatal, it has a significant impact on the quality of life. Knowledge about treatment is essential, as it plays a crucial role in symptom relief [1,2]. To assess patients’ knowledge about IBS medication and emergency medication administration. Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study using a non-probabilistic convenience sample. The pilot study included 22 patients at Padre Américo Hospital, Vale do Sousa, through an anonymous telephone survey, including medication name, action, dosage, duration, precautions, side effects, interactions, storage, and SOS use. Approved by the hospital ethics committee, participants signed informed consent and were anonymously identified using numerical codes. The sample was predominantly female (72.7%) with a mean age of 50 years. The majority (72.7%) knew what to administer and how to administer emergency medication (antidiarrheal, antiflatulents, laxatives, antispasmodics, benzodiazepines), and 63.6% demonstrated adequate knowledge about the diet that worsens symptoms. Significant gaps were found in knowledge regarding dosage, precautions, adverse reactions, contraindication, and medication storage. The present study helped identify existing gaps in patients’ knowledge, demonstrating that it can be a useful tool for assessing awareness of therapeutic interventions in larger patient samples with this condition. Health literacy is crucial to increasing medication adherence and safety. Limitations include the small sample size and the homogeneity of the participants. Future perspectives should include larger and more diverse samples.
