- Academic libraries in the digital transformation: the case of the library of the Faculty of Economics of the University of PortoPublication . Ferreira, Mariana; Preto, Paulina; Braga, InêsIn a world in which the digital transformation is asserting itself with increasing impact, higher education (HE) and academic libraries (AL) do not escape this reality and have been playing an important role in supporting teaching and learning, contributing, through different means, for the training of students. This work aims to show how a university library - that of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) - meets the needs of students, namely in terms of information literacy (IL) and digital literacy (DL), using for this the new technologies which enable the referred digital transformation and new ways of teaching and learning. Due to the current importance of the librarian's role as a trainer, the authors - the trainee of the degree in Documentation and Information Sciences and Technologies (LCTDI) of the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto (ISCAP), the FEP librarian and the internship advisor - designed a set of training sessions for IL within the scope of the curricular internship of said course in the academic year 2019-20. This project had as main objectives: (1) to provide distance learning; (2) to reduce the on-site training provided by the library; (3) to allow any member of the FEP community to have access to information that is relevant to them, whenever and wherever they want; (4) to offer training to the entire educational community, including Erasmus students, with the production of materials in Portuguese and English. The methodology adopted consisted of a review of the literature on the subject and a practical part carried out in the library involving the production of videos based on the observation of training sessions. From a theoretical point of view, the themes of IL and DL in AL are addressed, the role of the librarian in the development of such skills in students, the exploration of new digital tools used for training, more specifically, the production of tutorial videos, as well as distance learning. In the practical component of this project, eight video tutorials were produced on the search and location of information using the online catalog, the subject of one of the training activities given by the FEP library, and which addresses the most basic resources of the library, which is an essential resource for students. In conclusion, the creation of support materials that will soon be made available on the institution's website will surely contribute to the development of LI skills of a greater number of students. In addition, the new format of these contents will serve as a complement and / or substitute for face-to-face training sessions, responding to a problem detected by the institution itself - that the training for LI is not sufficient nor the most diversified among the academic community. Finally, the sharing and availability of information designed with a specific target audience in mind and disseminated through the right communication channels, is crucial for a profitable use, leading to the consequent satisfaction of users.
- Biofortified Diets Containing Algae and Selenised Yeast: Effects on Growth Performance, Nutrient Utilization, and Tissue Composition of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata)Publication . Ferreira, Mariana; Ribeiro, Pedro C.; Ribeiro, Laura; Barata, Marisa; Domingues, Valentina F.; Sousa, Sara; Soares, Cristina; Marques, Alexandra; Pousão-Ferreira, Pedro; Dias, Jorge; Castro, L. Filipe C.; Marques, António; Nunes, Maria L.; Valente, Luisa M. P.Efforts have been made to find natural, highly nutritious alternatives to replace fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO), which can simultaneously promote fish health and improve the nutritional quality of filets for human consumption. This study evaluated the impact of biofortified diets containing microalgae (as replacement for FM and FO), macroalgae (as natural source of iodine) and selenised yeast (organic source of selenium) on gilthead seabream growth, nutrient utilization, tissue composition and gene expression. A control diet (CTRL) with 15% FM and 5.5% FO was compared with three experimental diets (AD1, AD2, and AD3), where a microalgae blend (Chlorella sp., Tetraselmis sp., and DHA-rich Schizochytrium sp.) replaced 33% of FM. Diet AD1 contained 20% less FO. Diets were supplemented with Laminaria digitata (0.4% AD1 and AD2; 0.8% AD3) and selenised yeast (0.02% AD1 and AD2; 0.04% AD3). After feeding the experimental diets for 12 weeks, growth was similar in fish fed AD1, AD2, and CTRL, indicating that microalgae meal can partially replace both FM and FO in diets for seabream. But AD3 suppressed fish growth, suggesting that L. digitata and selenised yeast supplementation should be kept under 0.8 and 0.04%, respectively. Despite lower lipid intake and decreased PUFAs bioavailability in fish fed AD3, compared to CTRL, hepatic elovl5 was upregulated resulting in a significant increase of muscle EPA + DHA. Indeed, filets of fish fed AD2 and AD3 provided the highest EPA + DHA contents (0.7 g 100 g–1), that are well above the minimum recommended values for human consumption. Fish consuming the AD diets had a higher retention and gain of selenium, while iodine gain remained similar among diets. Upregulation of selenoproteins (gpx1, selk, and dio2) was observed in liver of fish fed AD1, but diets had limited impact on fish antioxidant status. Overall, results indicate that the tested microalgae are good sources of protein and lipids, with their LC-PUFAs being effectively accumulated in seabream muscle. Selenised yeast is a good fortification vehicle to increase selenium levels in fish, but efforts should be placed to find new strategies to fortify fish in iodine
- O Contacto no Acolhimento Familiar: Novelos do Passado, Linhas do Presente, Laços do FuturoPublication .

- Peptide conjugates for the topical treatment of infected woundsPublication . Gomes, Ana; Fernandes, Iva; Bessa, Lucinda; Ferreira, Mariana; Maciel, Joana; Plácido, Alexandra; Teixeira, Cátia; Leal, Ermelindo; Ferraz, Ricardo; Gameiro, Paula; Carvalho, Eugénia; Gomes, PaulaDue to widespread multidrug-resistant (MDR) microbes, efficient treatments for infected wounds are being exhausted.1 The symptoms of wound infection are consistent with local polymicrobial biofilms, which are difficult to eliminate and delay the healing process. The current standard of care requires oral antibiotics and other measures, often complex and distressing (e.g., amputations). A perfect treatment should promote both antimicrobial protection and fast tissue regeneration, to improve the inefficient healing in elderly people affected with, e.g., diabetes or venous/arterial insufficiency. 2 Considering the above, we advance peptide conjugates as potential active pharmaceutical ingredients for topical formulations to tackle skin infections. Such conjugates are anticipated to concomitantly display antimicrobial and anti-biofilm action along with fast healing through, e.g., collagenesis-inducing effects. Promising results were obtained with chimeric peptides combining a de novo designed antimicrobial peptide sequence 3 with a cosmetic peptide, used as anti-aging, with ability to induce collagen production.4 The best constructs exhibited: (i) antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including MDR clinical isolates; (iii) improved action against S. aureus (prevalent pathogen in chronically-infected wounds) in simulated wound fluid; and (v) antifungal activity. 5 The replacement of the antimicrobial peptide by an ionic liquid afforded a new conjugate, a peptide-ionic liquid construct, with broadspectrum antibacterial activity, antifungal action, and collagen-inducing effect. These results will be shown alongside the most recent findings that provide deeper insight into the mode of action of the best conjugates.
