- Agent-based architecture for demand side management using real-time resources’ priorities and a deterministic optimization algorithmPublication . Gomes, Luis; Spínola, João; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.Microgrids and smart grids are largely accepted concepts in power energy systems. They bring an innovative and distributed view to the old centralized system. This demands a more active participation from end-consumers, that can be achieved by using demand response and demand side management. In this paper it is proposed a solution for demand side management involving and agent-based architectures that was deployed in a small office. The deployment integrated an algorithm for generation and consumption balance with real-time contextual resources' priorities. The deployment's overall results, from a winter and a summer day, are presented in this paper.
- Application of a Home Energy Management System for Incentive-Based Demand Response Program ImplementationPublication . Abrishambaf, Omid; Fotouhi Ghazvini, Mohammad Ali; Gomes, Luis; Faria, Pedro; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.This paper presents an experimental real-time implementation of an incentive-based demand response program with hardware demonstration of a home energy management system. This system controls the electricity consumption of a residential electricity customer. For this purpose, the real consumption and generation profiles of a typical Portuguese household equipped with a home-scale photovoltaic system are employed. These profiles are simulated by the real-time digital simulator using real hardware resources. In the case studies, three different scenarios are simulated for a period of 24 hours with the consideration of the demand response programs and a 2 kW photovoltaic system. Different pricing scenarios are considered and the performance of the home energy management system is evaluated under each scenario. The focus is given to demonstrate how a home-scale photovoltaic system, and demand response programs, especially load-shifting scenario, can be cost-effective in the daily electricity costs of the residential customers.
- Application Ontology for Multi-Agent and Web-Services’ Co-Simulation in Power and Energy SystemsPublication . Teixeira, Brígida; Santos, Gabriel; Pinto, Tiago; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.Power and energy systems are very complex, and several tools are available to assist operators in their planning and operation. However, these tools do not allow a sensitive analysis of the impact of the interaction between the different sub-domains and, consequently, in obtaining more realistic and reliable results. One of the key challenges in this area is the development of decision support tools to address the problem as a whole. Tools Control Center - TOOCC - proposed and developed by the authors, enables the co-simulation of heterogeneous systems to study the electricity markets, the operation of the smart grids, and the energy management of the final consumer, among others. To this end, it uses an application ontology that supports the definition of scenarios and results comparison, while easing the interoperability among the several systems. This paper presents the application ontology developed. The paper addresses the methodology used for its development, its purpose and requirements, and its concepts, relations, facets and instances. The ontology application is illustrated through a case study, where different requirements are tested and demonstrated. It is concluded that the proposed application ontology accomplishes its goals, as it is suitable to represent the required knowledge to support the interoperability among the different considered systems.
- Constrained Generation Bids in Local Electricity Markets: A Semantic ApproachPublication . Santos, Gabriel; Faria, Pedro; Vale, Zita; Pinto, Tiago; Corchado, Juan M.he worldwide investment in renewable energy sources is leading to the formation of local energy communities in which users can trade electric energy locally. Regulations and the required enablers for effective transactions in this new context are currently being designed. Hence, the development of software tools to support local transactions is still at an early stage and faces the challenge of constant updates to the data models and business rules. The present paper proposes a novel approach for the development of software tools to solve auction-based local electricity markets, considering the special needs of local energy communities. The proposed approach considers constrained bids that can increase the effectiveness of distributed generation use. The proposed method takes advantage of semantic web technologies, in order to provide models with the required dynamism to overcome the issues related to the constant changes in data and business models. Using such techniques allows the system to be agnostic to the data model and business rules. The proposed solution includes the proposed constraints, application ontology, and semantic rule templates. The paper includes a case study based on real data that illustrates the advantages of using the proposed solution in a community with 27 consumers

- Dynamic Energy Management Method with Demand Response Interaction Applied in an Office BuildingPublication . Fernandes, Filipe; Gomes, Luis; Morais, Hugo; Silva, Marco; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.The intelligent management systems of the end consumers are endowed with advanced functions being one of them the interaction with external entities through the automatic participation in demand response programs. The development of the intelligent management systems is to reduce the energy consumption based on internal information and on the interaction with an external entity. Moreover, the management approaches results in an active participation of the consumers in the operation of the smart grids and microgrids concepts. The paper developed presents the application of a dynamic priority method in SCADA Office Intelligent Context Awareness Management system to manage the energy resources installed in an office building. The intelligent management method allows the dynamic active participation of the office building in the DR events considering the real data of consumption and generation of one building in Polytechnic of Porto. The main goal of the methodology is to obtain a dynamic scheduling for all energy resources with little interference in the comfort of users. The results of dynamic management model in office building are discussed for the participation in 8 hours demand response event. The power limit of the scenario depends on the consumption and micro-generation power of an October day.
- Energy Scheduling Using Decision Trees and Emulation: Agriculture Irrigation with Run-of-the-River Hydroelectricity and a PV Case StudyPublication . Abrishambaf, Omid; Faria, Pedro; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.Agriculture is the very backbone of every country. Unfortunately, agricultural sustainability is threatened by the lack of energy-efficient solutions. The threat becomes more evident with the constantly growing world population. The research community must, therefore, focus on resolving the problem of high energy consumption. This paper proposes a model of energy scheduling in agricultural contexts. Greater energy efficiency is achieved by means of PV (photovoltaics) and hydropower, as demonstrated in the conducted case study. The developed model is intended for contexts where the farm is located near a river, so the farmer can use the flowing water to produce energy. Moreover, the model has been emulated using a variety of state-of-the-art laboratory devices. Optimal energy scheduling is performed via a decision tree approach, optimizing the use of energy resources and reducing electricity costs. Finally, a realistic scenario is presented to show the technical features and the practical behaviors of each emulator when adapting the results of the decision tree. The research outcomes demonstrate the importance of the technical validation of each model. In addition, the results of the emulation reveal practical issues that had not been discovered during the theoretical study or during the simulation
- Intelligent Energy Forecasting based on the Correlation between Solar Radiation and Consumption patternsPublication . Vinagre, Eugénia; Paz, Juan F. De; Pinto, Tiago; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.; Garcia, OscarThe increasing penetration of renewable generation brings a significant escalation of intermittency to the power and energy system. This variability requires a new degree of flexibility from the whole system. The active participation of small and medium players becomes essential in this context. This is only possible by using adequate forecasting techniques applied both to the consumption and to generation. However, the large number of incontrollable factors, such as the presence of consumers in the building, the luminosity, or external temperature, makes the forecasting of energy consumption an arduous task. This paper addresses the electrical energy consumption forecasting problem, by studying the correlation between the solar radiation and the electrical consumption of lights. This study is performed by means of three forecasting methods, namely a multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network, a support vector regression method, and a linear regression method. The performed studies are analyzed using data gathered from a real installation – campus of the Polytechnic of Porto, in real time.
- Long-Term Smart Grid Planning Under Uncertainty Considering Reliability IndexesPublication . Canizes, Bruno; Soares, João; Fotouhi Ghazvini, Mohammad Ali; Silva, Cátia; Vale, Zita; Corchado, Juan M.The electricity sector is fast moving towards a new era of clean generation devices dispersed along the network. On one hand, this will largely contribute to achieve the multi-national environment goals agreed via political means. On the other hand, network operators face new complexities and challenges regarding network planning due to the large uncertainties associated with renewable generation and electric vehicles integration. In addition, due to new technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP), the district heat demand is considered in the long-term planning problem. The 13-bus medium voltage network is evaluated considering the possibility of CHP units but also without. Results demonstrate that CHP, together with heat-only boiler units, can supply the district heat demand and contribute to network reliability. They can also reduce the expected energy not supplied and the power losses cost, avoiding the need to invest in new power lines for the considered lifetime project.
