- Computer-based neuropsychological rehabilitationPublication . Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Barbosa, Fernando; Guerreiro, Sandra; Almeida, Isabel; Carvalho, Irene PalmaresNeurocognitive rehabilitation of people with acquired brain injury (ABI) is a part of neuropsychological rehabilitation that has gained increased interest in response to the growing incidence of this type of injury and to the possibility of post-injury survival, often associated with physical and cognitive deficits, as well as emotional and behavioral changes. These problems call for the need of innovative interventions that can overcome the limitations of traditional approaches to ABI.
- Conceptualization and rehabilitation of executive functions: A review of the literaturePublication . Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Carvalho, Irene Palmares; Barbosa, Fernando; Martins, Claúdia; de Sousa, Liliana; Castro-Caldas, AlexandrePublications on executive functions have increased in the last few years, reflecting the importance of this area of study. The scientific output on executive functions is now extremely diverse, comprising variations around terminology, assessment, and rehabilitation practices, and ranging in topics from neuroanatomical correlates of executive functions to effects of executive dysfunction. This review seeks to explore this diversity around executive functions in order to provide an integrative overview of the topic that systematizes the current knowledge in this area, and to point to trends and future directions for research and practice. The literature review was conducted in the ISI Web of Knowledge databases. The analysis was conducted in NVivo9. Two independent coders applied an inductive analysis to all relevant papers, building a hierarchical model with categories and subcategories of themes emerging from the literature. A confirmatory analysis followed, with the same independent coders applying the model to the papers. The process was validated by a third expert researcher. Out of 187 titles and abstracts, 91 were analyzed. The outcomes were structured in six main categories: central nervous system, diagnosis, population, assessment, intervention, and theoretical models. Key findings included promising trends in executive function assessment and rehabilitation as well as potential implications for current health approaches and future research.
- Iodine Status and Iodised Salt Consumption in Portuguese School-Aged Children: The Iogeneration StudyPublication . Leite, João Costa; Keating, Elisa; Pestana, Diogo; Fernandes, Virgínia; Maia, Maria; Norberto, Sónia; Pinto, Edgar; Moreira-Rosário, André; Sintra, Diana; Moreira, Bárbara; Costa, Ana; Silva, Sofia; Costa, Vera; Martins, Inês; Mendes, Francisca Castro; Queirós, Pedro; Peixoto, Bruno; Caldas, José Carlos; Guerra, António; Fontoura, Manuel; Leal, Sandra; Moreira, Roxana; Carvalho, Irene Palmares; Lima, Rui Matias; Martins, Catia; Delerue-Matos, Cristina; Almeida, Agostinho; Azevedo, Luís; Calhau, ConceiçãoThe World Health Organization promotes salt iodisation to control iodine deficiency. In Portugal, the use of iodised salt in school canteens has been mandatory since 2013. The present study aimed to evaluate iodine status in school-aged children (6-12 years) and to monitor the use of iodised salt in school canteens. A total of 2018 participants were randomly selected to participate in a cross-sectional survey in northern Portugal. Children's urine and salt samples from households and school canteens were collected. A lifestyle questionnaire was completed by parents to assess children's eating frequency of iodine food sources. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The median UIC was 129 µg/L which indicates the adequacy of iodine status and 32% of the children had UIC < 100 µg/L. No school canteen implemented the iodised salt policy and only 2% of the households were using iodised salt. Lower consumption of milk, but not fish, was associated with a higher risk of iodine deficiency. Estimation of sodium intake from spot urine samples could be an opportunity for adequate monitoring of population means. Implementation of iodine deficiency control policies should include a monitoring program aligned with the commitment of reducing the population salt intake.
- The radboud faces database: the influence of the sex of the model and respondent in facial expression recognitionPublication . Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Barbosa, Fernando; Carvalho, Irene Palmares; Marques, António da Silva; Queirós, Cristina; Oliveira, Mónica Queirós; Pedroso, João Paulo; Castro-Caldas, AlexandreThe investigation of emotional phenomena using simple presentation slides containing drawings, words or images is affect by factors such as the low researchers’ little control of the emotion-inducing stimuli. The studies in the domain of emotion recognition may benefit from databases such as Langner et al (2010) Radboud Faces Database (RaFD) in which particular characteristics of the emotion-inducing stimuli, such as facial expression, ethnicity, age, sex and the models’ gaze direction are controlled.
- Virtual City: Neurocognitive rehabilitation of Acquired Brain InjuryPublication . Dores, Artemisa Rocha; Miranda, Maria João; Carvalho, Irene Palmares; Mendes, Liliana; Barbosa, Fernando; Coelho, António; Sousa, Liliana de; Castro Caldas, AlexandreAcquired Brain Injury (ABI) is one of the leading causes of individuals' reduced participation in various contexts of life, compromising autonomous functioning and performance in complex activities. Neurocognitive rehabilitation, carried out by transdisciplinary teams, is part of the intervention after the acute phase, aiming patients' maximum functionality and quality of life. Serious games and virtual reality begin to provide innovative solutions in this area. In this study, a prototype platform for the rehabilitation of executive functioning and other related cognitive functions is presented: the Virtual City. Part of a larger project, it consists of urban virtual environments that simulate real-life scenarios and activities. Tests will be performed to validate it as a tool for the rehabilitation of ABI.
