- Exploring the Reciprocal Relationship between Quality of Life and the Degree of Internationalization in the Portuguese EconomyPublication . Brás, Rita Gaspar; Silva, Carina Cristiana Ribeiro da; Mendes, Telma Idalina LeiteThe intensification of globalization has brought the internationalization of economies to the forefront of both academic and policy agendas, particularly with regard to its implications for sustainable development and social well-being. While traditionally assessed through economic indicators, the phenomenon of internationalization increasingly requires a multidimensional perspective that incorporates its intersection with key social domains, including health, education, labor markets, and institutional cohesion. Based on the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Institutional Theory, this dissertation aims to contribute to this broader analytical framework by exploring the bidirectional relationship between internationalization and quality of life at the macro-level, focusing specifically on the Portuguese economy. The research is structured around two distinct, yet complementary, empirical studies. The first adopts a cross-sectional design using annual data spanning from 2005 to 2022. Employing multiple linear regression models, this study assesses the influence of the degree of economic openness on quality of life, and vice-versa, through two separate models. The findings do not provide statistical support for a direct relationship between internationalization and quality of life, nor in the opposite direction. Nevertheless, the analysis identifies the significant roles of key structural variables, such as average life expectancy, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, and the unemployment rate, which exhibit a more decisive impact on both internalization and quality of life.
