Práticas educativas e internamento de jovens em Portugal na transição do século XIX para o século XX - A Colónia agrícola correcional de Vila Fernando

Abstract

Inaugurada em 1895 junto a Elvas, a Colónia Agrícola Correcional de Vila Fernando procurava a regeneração de jovens por meio do trabalho, buscando também acabar com as péssimas condições a que estavam sujeitos os jovens ao serem encarcerados com os adultos, nas cadeias do país. Analisaremos, no período compreendido entre finais do século XIX e início do século XX, os diferentes processos educativos presentes no quotidiano da instituição, nas práticas do trabalho, da formação profissional e do ensino escolar, procurando averiguar, numa perspetiva histórico-pedagógica, de que modo a instituição foi capaz de conciliar o carácter disciplinador do trabalho com a reintegração social.

This work whose subject is the study of the Colónia Agrícola de Vila Fernando, opened in 1895 in Portugal, near Elvas, in order to regenerate juveniles through work and to end with the terrible conditions which they were subjected by being incarcerated with adults in jails all over the country. It is our intention to examine, in the period between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century, the different educational processes present in the daily life of the institution, in work practices, in vocational training and school education and trying to inquire on a historical and pedagogical perspective how the institution was able to reconcile the disciplinary nature of work with social reintegration.
