Abstract(s)
Lifelong Learning (LLL) opportunities for people with disabilities are an integral part of the right to education, community engagement and active citizenship. As a community-based social response, CACIĀ“s actions involve viewing opportunities for LLL as a way of mediating the path to inclusion, enabling greater access to community resources and activities. Despite appearing on the political agenda, this action objective has been little analysed, especially regarding the content of the opportunities promoted and how they align with the aim of participation in the community. The present study aims to describe the life and participation in the community of adults supported in four CACI in the north of Portugal, as well as to analyse the LLL opportunities promoted by one of these services. In particular, we explored: (i) attendance and involvement in the community through a survey of 105 people supported in CACI ā with the application of a modified version of the Community Involvement Index (Raynes & Sumpton, 1989, modified by Bigby, Bould & Beadle-Brown, 2015) ā and (ii) the themes, objectives/content and strategies contained in pedagogical sessions developed in a CACI through documentary analysis. For the first objective, the study involved the translation and adaptation of the modified version of the Index to Portugal. For the second objective, the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) was used as a scheme for categorizing the contents included in the planning of pedagogical sessions. The results obtained reinforce that the life and participation in the community of these adults is poor both in attendance and in connectivity with the community. The analysis of the pedagogical sessions highlights the focus on skills related to manual skills and writing, with little investment being noted in other areas important for community participation such as financial management and maintaining relationships. The need for activities to focus on empowerment and choice and decision-making skills is also highlighted, developing self-advocacy skills and the ability to define personal objectives and action plans.
