Abstract(s)
The tourist activity in Madeira island plays a main role in this region’s economy and is one of the most important strategies to its development. In the last decade Madeira Regional Government has identified the need to invest on diversified and alternative products in both rural and natural areas to complement the main consolidated touristic products that already exist. Madeira island’s potential for the practice of sports activities has always been recognized by the government and local community, but these alternative segments have only recently started to be promoted. This investigation seeks to explore the possibility to promote the active tourism as a way to attract new markets but also to improve the infrastructure and equipment that support all related activities. Other main goal of this research is to focus on the characterization of the economic importance that active tourism can bring to this region and its growing effects on the accommodation industry. This research work starts with a theorization on both active and rural tourism concepts and their definition through literature review. The first phase of this investigation is dedicated to the theorizing of these types of tourism and inherent activities. In the second phase of the research some main methodological procedures are adopted through theoretical contents extracted from the literature review. The last part of the research is based on a preliminary approach that applies a questionnaire to the tourists that are in rural areas of Madeira island. This approach stems from a fieldwork on Madeira Island that includes a sample of 194 (one hundred and ninety-four) tourists with the main purpose of studying the means in which active tourism can contribute to the development and promotion of rural tourism units.
