Abstract(s)
Private Foundations appeared in Portugal only a few decades ago despite being already considered as one of the most institutionalized organizations within the Third Sector. One of the gaps evidenced by Third Sector organizations is the use of models and practices from the corporate sector. Through the elaboration of two scientific articles, the aim is to: (1) clarify and understand the concept of governance according to the scientific literature; (2) measure the scientific productivity of articles, journals and authors in the Nonprofit Governance area; (3) present bibliometric maps of citations, co-citations and word networks in order to identify potential future research themes; (4) characterize the governance structure of Portuguese Foundations; (5) identify the main motivations of the governance boards of Portuguese Foundations to perform their roles; and (6) assess the relationships between Nonprofit Governance factors and organizational performance. The main purpose of this dissertation is to carry out a practical and conceptual approach to the governance practices adopted by Portuguese Foundations and to understand the factors that predict their organizational performance.
