Abstract(s)
utilizados.
Non-profit organizations (NPOs) often depend on volunteers to carry out their activities and fulfill their missions. Volunteers contribute their time, knowledge and energy to support many social causes and cooperate to strengthen society, promote positive change and create a more just and caring world. Firefighters embody the combination of the duty that guides them and the vocation that fuels them. Firefighters' service can be voluntary and/or paid, but in Portugal, firefighters are only hired by the Humanitarian Associations of Volunteer Firefighters on condition that they are previously volunteers, and when this condition is not met, the consequences for their activity can be numerous. These conditions call for an in-depth study to assess the motivations and voluntariness of this service. This study aims to investigate the voluntary nature and motivations of volunteer and/or contract employee firefighters from humanitarian firefighting associations in mainland Portugal in providing voluntary service, using a quantitative methodology by applying a questionnaire based on the Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) at two distinct temporal moments. We adopted an integrated approach, through a confirmatory factor analysis of the VFI factors combined with the psychological needs and motivations of the Self-Determination Theory, which enabled us to obtain significant results and demonstrate the validity and reliability of the instruments used.
