Abstract(s)
In recent decades, the business environment has been shaped by constant changes driven by technological advances and innovation, requiring organisations to adapt rapidly in order to remain competitive. This study was guided by the following research question: How does Industry 5.0 influence the adoption of Quality 5.0 practices, and how do these, together, contribute to the performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Portugal? To address this question, a conceptual model grounded in the literature was developed, linking these constructs, and a set of hypotheses was tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The empirical analysis was based on a questionnaire of Portuguese SMEs across various industrial sectors. Out of a total of 35,691 organisations, 468 responses were collected, of which 439 were deemed valid. The results suggest that the adoption of Industry 5.0 and Quality 5.0 does not rely solely on the use of emerging technologies, but primarily on their integration into organisational practices centred on humans and sustainability. Moreover, it was confirmed that the implementation of Industry 5.0 and Quality 5.0 positively contributes to the operational, financial, social, and environmental performance of SMEs. This dissertation contributes to the academic discourse by providing an integrated perspective on how Industry 5.0 and Quality 5.0 can be operationalised in Portuguese SMEs, highlighting the critical factors for their adoption and their impacts on organisational performance, while also offering guidance for organisations seeking to implement these approaches in a sustainable and human-centred manner.
