Abstract(s)
Most of the furniture factories in Portugal are located in the north of the country, more specifically in the Paços de Ferreira-Paredes complex. Being characterized almost entirely as Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), most of them have no internal management tools and rely on informal mechanisms. This dissertation has, as object of study the productive process of the furniture industry, in the context of companies that receive custom orders, producing a variety of products created specifically for each client or request. To structure the productive management of companies inserted in this context, this work defines and analyzes the parallel between the requirements of an Engineering-to-order (ETO) production system, and the project management processes. Within what was proposed, it was possible to realize the existing connection and the lack of research that explores this parallel. The established parallel was demonstrated through the division into the groups of project management processes in conjunction with the ETO-related literature. The parallelism created will allow companies to view their orders as a project, and from this perspective to use the knowledge developed here to become more structured, productive, and efficient, so that they can have better competitive chances among their competitors.
