Abstract(s)
The aim of this work was to present a spiritual approach to the language of Olivier Messiaen as well as a religious contemplation, from the analysis of his work for piano, Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus. Major work of the piano repertoire, composed between March 23 and September 8, 1944, it comprises a cycle of 20 pieces which the complete performance surpasses two hours. A work composed for piano, it , represents the specific or idiossincratic features of the language of Messiaen. The conception and intent of the thematic material of the work are deeply religious, as referred by Messiaen: it portrays the reality of the "contemplation of the Child Jesus in the manger and the looks that come upon him." The method adopted in this study was established to allow a greater understanding of the work and thus explore and generate ideas or resources that can be applied in its musical interpretation. To this, bibliographic records were consulted and entities that directly or indirectly have contacted with the composer were interviewed. The comprehensive study of the work allowed us to obtain a more complete and conceptually vision of it, as well as its underlying spiritual component. This study intends to provide performers, the academic community and music enthusiasts of Olivier Messiaen, a summary of research on the life and work of the composer, presenting a vision of the Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant Jesus who hopefully delivers the opening of new directions for future investigations and interpretations of the work.
