Abstract(s)
To some investigators, the institutionalization of children and teenagers may signify a sanctuary from a life of negligence or mistreat, a safe refuge able to provide an exchange of signs of affection, opportunity for socialization with other children, adolescents and adults, as well as the creation of routines and life forms negotiated by all. Others, however, suggest that prolonged institutionalization is pejorative to the full development of the child. According to some studies, these children tend to exhibit emotional instability, lack of affection, low selfesteem, serious behaviour problems, difficulty in creating links, a tendency for isolation, fear, suffering and feelings of rejection and/or guilt, beside a physical, intellectual and psychomotor developmental delay. As I believe in the benefits of the Theatre in the bio-psycho-social-motor development of the child, I have decided to study this performing art, as a form of interaction and intervention, in a group of institutionalized children from the “Lar de Infância e Juventude Obra do Frei Gil – Ramalde” (Obra do Frei Gil foster home for children and adolescents, in Ramalde), with whom I have developed a theatre project, which culminated in a public performance. The investigative period has allowed me to conclude that Theatre, on its own, does not stimulate emotional outbursts, releasing of emotions, neither does it pacify internal conflicts; however, it promotes communication, interpersonal relationships, a spirit of cooperation and team work, openness to others, respect for others, experience of affection, acceptance of physical contact and increase of self-esteem. It also stimulates concentration, imagination and it may be an inhibitor to aggressive behaviour.
