O presente relatório de estágio apresenta uma abordagem comparativa e experiencial ao tema da tradução de textos com linguagem especializada e jurídica. O estágio, realizado na Word Perfect Translations em Dublin, Irlanda, ofereceu uma oportunidade única para testemunhar como a tradução opera no nexo entre ética profissional, língua e direito, a nível internacional. O estágio de cinco meses ajudou a aproximar aprendizagem em sala de aula e o trabalho de tradução de uma empresa de prestação de serviços linguísticos, aplicando os conhecimentos adquiridos ao longo do Mestrado em Tradução e Interpretação Especializadas e durante a licenciatura em Línguas Literaturas e Culturas.
O relatório está dividido em três capítulos. O primeiro capítulo apresenta a empresa de acolhimento - Word Perfect Translations -, define o contexto organizacional e reflete sobre as questões práticas enfrentadas durante o estágio, especialmente as relacionadas com a tradução de documentos oficiais. O enquadramento teórico é desenvolvido no segundo capítulo. Este capítulo descreve os sistemas de tradução certificada em Portugal, Brasil e Irlanda – países associados às principais línguas de trabalho e contextos de origem dos documentos manuseados. Através de uma análise dos seus quadros institucionais, fundamentos jurídicos e contexto histórico, o relatório demonstra como diversas jurisdições conferem credibilidade e responsabilidade aos tradutores. O terceiro capítulo articula teoria e prática, apresentando exemplos concretos e oferecendo uma reflexão crítica sobre as implicações éticas e profissionais do ato tradutório em contextos jurídicos e institucionais diferentes. Mediante esta perspetiva teórica e prática combinada, o relatório defende que a tradução certificada representa não só um exercício linguístico, mas também um ato jurídico e ético fundamentado na confiança institucional.
O conhecimento e a experiência adquiridos na Word Perfect Translations ilustram a função vital do tradutor como mediador linguístico, uma vez que promoveu a consciencialização intercultural, a maturidade profissional e uma maior compreensão de como a tradução funciona como uma profissão ética e socialmente responsável.
This internship report presents a comparative and experiential approach to the topic of translating texts with specialized and legal language. The internship, carried out at Word Perfect Translations in Dublin, Ireland, offered a unique opportunity to witness how translation operates at the nexus between professional ethics, language, and law, at an international level. The five-month internship helped to bridge classroom learning and translation work at a language services company, applying the knowledge acquired throughout the Master's degree in Specialized Translation and Interpretation and during the undergraduate degree in Letters, Literatures and Cultures. The report is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the host company - Word Perfect Translations -, defines the organizational context, and reflects on the practical issues faced during the internship, especially those related to the translation of official documents. The theoretical framework is developed in the second chapter. This chapter describes the certified translation systems in Portugal, Brazil, and Ireland – countries associated with the main working languages and contexts of origin of the documents handled. Through an analysis of their institutional frameworks, legal foundations, and historical context, the report demonstrates how various jurisdictions confer reference and responsibility upon translators. The third chapter articulates theory and practice, presenting concrete examples and offering a critical reflection on the ethical and professional implications of the act of translation in different legal and institutional contexts. Through this combined theoretical and practical perspective, the report argues that sworn translation represents not only a linguistic exercise, but also a legal and ethical act grounded in institutional trust. The knowledge and experience gained at Word Perfect Translations illustrate the vital role of the translator as a linguistic mediator, as it has promoted intercultural awareness, professional maturity, and a greater understanding of how translation functions as an ethical and socially responsible profession.
