Abstract(s)
The present dissertation is based on the design of a tied-arch bridge with a vertical hanger arrangement in the capital of Egypt, Cairo. A brief historical reference is made from the beginning of the first evidence of bridges until the appearance of the first metal bridges A short description of the structural elements and the materials used is provided. Then, using the Midas Civil software, two models are presented with the composite deck characterized in two different ways. The advantages of each model are briefly discussed. All permanent and variable actions considered in the project are analyzed in detail. The combinations of actions considered are in accordance with applicable European regulations. A linear elastic analysis of the models is also performed. In this dissertation, a study is carried out on the deformations, forces, and moments in the respective structural elements of the bridge as well as safety checks involving in and out of plane arch buckling and cables. The structure's natural vibration frequencies are also determined. Finally, a study is carried out on the impact of different hanger arrangements on the structural behavior of the bridge. Alternative solutions of Nielsen type and Network type are discussed, and the viability of each solution is studied.
