Abstract(s)
Increasingly, the circular economy is seen as an important tool for the economic growth of countries and for the creation of value in companies. There are many companies, national and international, that already apply their principles in the development of their business, while the state has promoted public policies that encourage the shift to the principles of circular economy. The main objectives of this dissertation are to identify the degree of development of the circular economy in the furniture companies of Paredes and Paços de Ferreira, as well as knowing its main problems and expectations generated by the transition to a new business model. The survey showed that half of the companies do not know or are taking the first steps in the circular economy, while the other half are seeking to move towards the new business model. From the activities carried out by the companies to integrate the principles of circular economy in their activities highlight the minimization of waste and energy saving, being the wood and the polish derivatives (varnish) waste the the most mentioned. The lack of skilled labor and the lack of resources for research & development are pointed out as the biggest weaknesses experienced by companies to join the circular economy. Regarding the measures that could encourage the entry into the new business model, the increase of recycling, the reduction of the consumption of virgin materials and the largest increase in furniture recovery and repair were mentioned. Granting financial incentives and tax benefits could help companies get into the new business model more quickly. Indeed, the results of the study show that, by themselves, companies do not seem willing to allocate too many resources, because in the long run, the expectation of profits is for the majority unknown.
