Abstract(s)
Portuguesa do Mobiliário.
The main goal of this study was to assess the implementation of sustainable business models with a focus on environmental considerations within the context of SMEs in the Portuguese Furniture Industry. Furthermore, the aim is to comprehend how these enterprises can adapt their business models to effectively address the challenges introduced by the circular economy, considering the nature of the products they design and produce. To this end, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to delve into the fundamental concepts of Environmental Sustainability and Innovation, particularly in connection with the 5 Stages of Change framework proposed by Nidumolu et al. (2009). The Portuguese Furniture Industry's dual role as one of the most economically significant sectors and simultaneously has considerable environmental challenges has kindled a keen interest in its scrutiny and the pursuit of innovative remedies. This interest is particularly pronounced during a period when sustainability is in high demand, propelled by both governmental mandates and consumer expectations. The impetus for this shift in focus arises from the multifaceted issues stemming from climate change, pollution and deforestation, and other related concerns. The investigation was underpinned by an intricate pilot survey tested on 16 companies (of the 660 surveys sent) operating within the Portuguese Furniture Sector. The findings indicate that these companies are currently at an embryonic stage regarding the emphasis placed on environmental sustainability and its implications on their business models. A legal compliance rate of 18.75% is observed among companies, signifying that the predominant portion of the surveyed entities has not advanced beyond the initial Stage of Change. Nonetheless, the entirety of surveyed companies incorporates at least one innovation within their value chain. Nevertheless, companies exhibit a lack of readiness to attain the ultimate Stage of Change, as they do not engage in innovative practices.
