Abstract(s)
English teaching in Primary Education and the teacher’s role, in an ever changing globalized world, involves a transformative reading of education, as the world is becoming increasingly interconnected and interdependent. It is crucial to provide students with activities which promote the development of human and social values. Thus, the aim is to train and prepare citizens who respect not only their identity but also that of others, facing linguistic and cultural diversity as a source of mutual enrichment. This study was developed in a 4th grade class and seeks to understand the potential of English teaching for the student’s personal and social education as future 21 century citizen. In order to outline and structure this study, the following starting question has been formulated: How can the Primary Education English teacher foster the global development of the student as a 21st century citizen? Based on my experience achieved during the internship, this project is a case study, using documental analysis (didactic plans, self-evaluation reports and official documents) and a phenomenological and thus qualitative approach. The analysis of the results suggests that the different activities carried out by the English teacher in the Primary Education setting produced the desired effects, because they seem to have provided students’ personal and social enrichment, developing crucial competences for the modern society’s citizen.
