Abstract(s)
This document aims to present the work carried out during and internship at NCREP – Consultoria em Reabilitação do Edificado e do Património. The company works in the field of conservation and rehabilitation of existing buildings, providing services such as consultancy, inspection and diagnosis, building monitoring, and rehabilitation project design. During the internship, there was an active participation in various inspection and diagnoses campaigns. This document presents two practical cases: Casa Leça da Palmeira and Casa Bairros – Timber roof. These cases resulted in inspection and diagnosis reports, safety assessments and structural rehabilitation projects. Finally, a study was conducted on water consumption in building rehabilitation through a life cycle assessment. The objective of this study was to complement and expand the existing databases at NCREP, which aim to assess the sustainability of the rehabilitation interventions designed by the company. Initially, the study involved measuring/surveying the quantities of existing, demolished, and new materials in each case study. Following, an intensive literature review was performed to evaluate water consumption during raw material production and construction processes. Finally, a direct comparison of water consumption was established between the execution project designed by NCREP (scenario 1) and a scenario of a complete interior demolition and reconstruction using reinforced concrete (scenario 2). The study also allowed confirming the initial assumptions, showing that an intervention based on inspection and diagnosis not only presents significant advantages from a water consumption perspective but also corroborates that the greatest advantage in this type of approach is the invaluable preservation of the resource source within the existing built environment, which cannot be ignored.
