Partindo de uma questão sobre o papel e a importância da fotografia (profissional ou amadora) como documento e registo do passado, reflecte-se, primeiramente, sobre a origem e evolução dos arquivos em Portugal. Em seguida, aborda-se a relação do arquivo e da fotografia, o motivo porque guardamos e arquivamos e os diferentes usos artísticos dados ao arquivo. O papel e a evolução da fotografia amadora são a temática abordada em seguida, focando aqui também a fotografia de família. Pensou-se que seria importante para esta reflexão sobre o papel da fotografia na preservação da memória analisar as formas como a memória é transmitida, dando um foco especial às formas de transmissão da memória em Arouca, como exemplo de uma vila do interior de Portugal. Tendo em conta os variados usos de imagens de arquivo na arte actual, foi abordado, em seguida, o pós-modernismo (as suas principais características e vertentes) e a apropriação, reflectindo sobre as razões que levam a esta prática e a sua evolução.
Tendo em conta o projecto Vestígios analisaram-se duas obras de dois artistas que, de alguma forma, se relacionam com o projecto referido - Collected Visions de Lorie Novak e Sans Soleil de Chris Marker. Seguidamente, é feita uma descrição detalhadas das metodologias seguidas desde os primeiros momentos de Vestígios até à sua conclusão. Finaliza-se com uma reflexão sobre a questão do papel da fotografia na transmissão e preservação da memória.
Starting from a question about the role and the importance of the photograph (professional or amateur) as document and record of the past, primarily, an investigation is made about the origin and evolution of the archives in Portugal. Then, the relationship the archive and photography is discussed, the reason why we keep archiving and the different artistic uses the archive. The role and evolution of amateur photography is the theme addressed next, focusing also on family photography. It seemed important for this reflection on the role of photography in preserving memory to examine the ways of memory transmission, giving a special focus to the ways of memory transmission in Arouca, as an example of a village in the interior of Portugal. Given the multiple uses of archival images in modern art, postmodernism was approached then (its main characteristics and dimensions) and the appropriation, reflecting on the reasons that lead to this practice and its evolution. Taking into account the project Traces, two works of two artists were analyzed, who, in some way, relate to the project mentioned - Collected Visions by Lorie Novak and Sans Soleil by Chris Marker. After, a detailed description of the methodologies used is made from the first moments of Traces to its completion. This document ends with a reflection on the question of the role of photography in the transmission and preservation of memory.
