Foram selecionadas e estudadas com maior detalhe duas normas técnicas sobre olfatometria: EN 13725:2002 - Stationary source emissions - Determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry and odour emission rate e VDI 3882 - Verein deutscher Ingenieure – Olfactometry – Determination of odour intensity (Part 1) and Determination of hedonic odour tone (Part 2), para caracterizar e quantificar os “odores”.
The release of odoriferous compounds and diffuse emissions into the ambient air is a current problem in many industrial installations. To provide its customers with tools to control this type of pollution, A.Ramalhão intends to implement methodologies for monitoring these emissions. This dissertation was therefore proposed, focusing on this topic and, in particular on “odours”. Several steps were defined to achieve this objective: conducting research on “odours”, diffuse emissions, the legal framework and appropriate technical standards for monitoring; researching suitable monitoring equipment; developing procedures and report templates for identifying and quantifying “odours”; conducting real tests with the acquired equipment. This dissertation therefore presents an extensive study of the concepts of “odours” and diffuse emissions and their applicable methodologies, technical standards, legal framework and reference documents. Two technical standards on olfactometry were selected and studied in greater detail: EN 13725:2002 – “Stationary source emissions - Determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry and odour emission rate” and VDI 3882 – “Verein deutscher Ingenieure – Olfactometry – Determination of odour intensity (Part 1) and Determination of hedonic odour tone (Part 2)”, to characterise and quantify “odours”. From the research on the equipment available on the market, the following were proposed to the Company: an olfactometer for laboratory use, Olfasense TO8 evolution, and another for field use, Scentroid SM100i. A procedure was created for identifying “odour” emission points and a report template to send the results to the client. The study was applied in a practical case involving a (real) inventory of “odour” emission points at a waste recovery facility and, as it was not possible to carry out actual quantification tests, a determination was simulated based on fictitious values. The work carried out is a very important contribution so that the Company can, very soon, acquire the necessary equipment to implement the methodologies studied and respond to customer requests about “odours”. In the near future, a real quantification of ”odours” is expected, as well as the development of the necessary procedures for the assessment of diffuse emissions.
