This report forms the final component of the Master’s Degree in Music Teaching at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo, in the specialization of Instrument and Ensemble Classes, Trombone. It results from the Supervised Teaching Practice carried out during the 2023/2024 academic year at Escola Básica e Secundária Tomás de Borba – Conservatório Regional de Angra do Heroísmo, combining the pedagogical experience developed in this context with a research project on trombone teaching in the Azores. The research focuses on the relationship between formal trombone education and the Azorean philharmonic tradition, considering the role of philharmonic bands in the musical initiation and training of many young instrumentalists. It aimed to understand how experiences acquired in philharmonic contexts are recognized, valued or articulated within specialized music education. Methodologically, the study adopted a qualitative, descriptive and interpretative approach, using a mixed questionnaire and semi-structured interviews addressed to participants connected to the trombone, formal music education and the Azorean philharmonic movement. The analysis made it possible to identify contributions, tensions and possibilities of articulation between these educational contexts. The results show that philharmonic bands continue to play a decisive role in the musical initiation of many Azorean trombonists, promoting skills such as group work, sight-reading, collective listening, endurance, motivation and a sense of community belonging. On the other hand, formal education proved to be essential for the technical, artistic and methodological development of instrumental learning. It is concluded that a stronger articulation between philharmonic bands and formal education may contribute to a more contextualized, integrated and culturally grounded musical training in the Azores.
