Diagnosis and monitoring of Candida albicans urinary tract infections by eletronic nose analysis

Abstract(s)

eNose is rapidly gaining prominence as a diagnostic tool for several pathologies. This thesis focuses on the detection of candiduria by monitoring the volatile organic compounds released by the metabolic activity of fungi in urine. Candida spp. is the most common fungus contributing to urinary tract infections. The urinalysys, most used for diagnosis, can sometimes contribute to erroneous conclusions, and urine culture is time-consuming, so it is crucial to develop new detection methods eNose allows the identification of the volatile profile of Candida albicans and is possibly a more effective means of diagnosis and treatment. Initially, to obtain all the information regarding the analysis of urine samples by eNose, a systematic review was written. This included original articles that met pre-determined inclusion factos. All are based on human studies for the detection of pathologies through urine; the results demonstrated the potential of eNose for diagnosis, showing high sensitivity and specificity. In a second phase of the work, a meta-analysis was written. The practical componente of this work involved analyzing diferente urine samples usisng eNose and the comparion of the results obtained to identify candiduria.
