Abstract(s)
This master's thesis project proposes the preservation thru digitalization of traditional Portuguese membranophone instruments, with a focus on the Adufe, one of the most emblematic of the national musical tradition. Given the increasing loss of traditional musical practices and the difficulty in accessing learning to play these instruments, this research seeks to document and record the sound of the Adufe through the creation of a sampling library, contributing to preservation and spreading of this musical heritage. The methodology will include an ethnomusicological study of the Adufe, from its artisanal construction to its playing techniques, as well as high-quality recordings in different tunings, dynamics, and percussive techniques. These samples will be organized and made available in formats compatible with music production software, ensuring on the one hand the digital preservation of the instrument and on the other its accessibility for musicians, producers and researchers. A small composition will be made available, in stereo audio format, using only the three virtual Adufes that were created in this project. In addition to the impact on the safeguarding of Portuguese sound heritage, the project aims to encourage the use of the Adufe in contemporary music, promoting a dialogue between tradition and innovation. In this way, this research will contribute to the appreciation of Portuguese popular culture and to the dissemination of the Adufe in the context of global musical production.
