Abstract(s)
It is well known that these two topics - interest rates and inflation - are of fundamental importance in personal and business life, but there is a certain amount of misinformation about them. Given their huge impact in this broad scope of the economic perspective, which is undoubtedly related to the aim of the Master's Degree in Auditing at the Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do Porto, this work was been developed . This dissertation considered the study and learning of these issues, presenting in an introductory phase a literature review on the banking sector, mortgage loans, interest rates and inflation. Gathering this information, a case study was drawn up - a survey - on interest rates and inflation in Portugal. It was possible to emphasise three key points: inflation is a general increase in the price of goods and services; interest rate variation is the best way to control inflation; and finally, mortgage credit is the most widely used resource for financing home ownership. Throughout this work it has been possible to see the link between interest rates and inflation, as well as the significant impacts of their variation. Raising interest rates is the most efficient mechanism for combating inflation, but on the other hand, it makes it more difficult to get a mortgage. Rising inflation affects people's decisions and their behaviour.
