Abstract(s)
The following Professional Internship Report describes the activities developed at the Oporto Music Conservatory in the 2019/2020 academic year, in the curricular unit Supervised Educational Practice in Instrument Teaching – Clarinet. The search for adaptations of traditional Azorean repertoire for Clarinet teaching was a motivating factor for the Research Project. This led to a quest for information on the main symbol of Azorean music, the Viola da Terra, and to an interview with the main promoter of this instrument in the last few years, the musician Rafael Carvalho. Then, nine themes of traditional Azorean repertoire were collected and selected, each one symbolizing one of the islands of the Azores, to adapt them from this instrument with fingering strings to the clarinet. Some of these themes were recorded for the first time ever for Viola da Terra and transcribed for clarinet by Antero Ávila, Marco Patrício, and Rafael Carvalho, having been tested and worked on the clarinet by me, in collaboration with the composers. Subsequently, the arrangements were recorded by me, with the accompaniment of the Rafael Carvalho at the Viola da Terra and made available on the YouTube platform. Finally, three experienced clarinet teachers were asked to assess the outcome of this transformation and as well as its suitability for integrating the clarinet program in the school curriculum. Thus, it is expected that this work has contributed to add up a pedagogical complement to the existing repertoire models, combining the history of this region of Portugal with the theoretical and practical components of the teaching practice.
