Abstract(s)
The environmental sustainability theme has gained a growing importance on a global scale in the last decades. This study aims to map the green human resource management (GHRM) practices developed by companies operating in Portugal that hold the ISO 14001 standard - Environmental Management Systems. The research also aims to identify the benefits that companies associate with green human resources management, as well as the constraints and challenges they recognize in the implementation of these management practices. The influence of ISO 14001 on GRHV is also analyzed. In order to pursue the objectives, an approach based on a qualitative methodology is used, anchored to not only semi-structured interviews conducted with a limited, but diversified, set of professionals (human resources professionals and those entrusted with the environmental sustainability of companies), but also investigation of data that is analytically significant to the subject. The results show that organizations in Portugal implement environmental practices that fit into GHRM, but they lack a holistic understanding. The operational nature of ISO 14001 does not impact, in a profound way, on the multidimensional conception of GHRM. The benefits of GHRM are moderated by the constraints inherent to the Portuguese business environment, imposing future challenges for its implementation and success. The study also discusses the implications of the findings for organizations and provides suggestions for future research.
